Finbacks!

suddenly i'm buried in them! my brother and i just picked up 2 of them. one is a 60 220s, black, original owner; sounds like a parts car. the other is a black 64 220s that has a solid body, and decent paint. its a 4 speed stick car too.

theres also a later 190d finback down the street that looks abandoned, anyone think i should bring it home?

mike

actually do have some questions:

1. do finbacks have a vinyl headliner, or coth like?

2. should the engine block be red?

All my Mercedes engine blocks are or have been black.

Eary Fintails, like my '60 220S, had an off-white cotton 'fuzz' velour cloth. By mid-late '60s this was changed to perforated vinyl. Most of the velour, except for protected areas like over my sunvisors, has worn off so my headliner now looks like a dirty brownish bedsheet, with some rips and waterstains to add to the distinctiveness!
I've seen the cloth replaced with vinyl or, if you want something closer to the original, you can go to a fabric store and get nylon velour cloth. That's what I used for the headliner replacement in my Ponton, many years ago and what I'm planning to use in my Finback as well. The nylon velour will get dirty over time but it won't rot or lose its 'fuzz' like the original cotton.

Yes, you need another Finback because one is never enough!

Happy Motoring, Mark

well we picked up the "64" last night, it runs perfectly but it needs brakes hoses in the worst way; the right front doesnt work at all! this one looks like its been to an upolstery shop, the seats have been redone in regular vinyl, and the headliner just doesnt look right. the paint waxed out to look good in the dark, body is straight enough not to worry about what under the paint, and only some minor rust in the trunk wells.

its a neat car, 220s 4 speed on the column (never driven 4 on the tree before), 4 wheel drums, power! manual steering

and i LOVE the sound the 6 makes, its very musical

According to my reference book, the 220S got front discs in April of '62, so that one might not be a '64.

I like my columnshift, especially the reactions I get from other people. (How long did it take you to find reverse?) I recently gave a friend's college-age kid a ride to the Metro train station. After he noticed me working my '4 on the tree' he said "No way! I thought it was an automatic. How does it work?!"

I think many modern 'jelly-bean' cars could be improved with a couple of tailfins. Besides, they're very helpfull when backing up!

Did any finbacks have 4-wheel drums in 1964? Perhaps the 220S isn't a 220S.

looking at the www.heckflosse.nl
it seems this one is late enough to have the door mirror, but early enough to have drums?

its possible that the doors been changed too, i guess. i'm not convinced that the car is 100% correct, granted i'm not sure whats correct either

My reference lists the 190c/Dc and base model 220b as the last Fintails to have 4-wheel drum brakes. Those got power assisted front discs in August of '63.

My 63 220S has four wheel drum brakes and a red/maroon engine bay. Maroon was the original color of the car. Also the headliner was replace with a crappy felt type material but you can tell the original was perforated vinyl.

I changed my engine to the M127 FI but I still have some parts for the M180 including Solex Carbs. which were working nice at the time of removal (a year or so ago). They'll probably need cleaning up but let me know if you need em.

Ah, those nice solid California cars. Wish my Fintail would clean up that easy and had only rusty trunk wells. Actually my trunk wells are not too bad. It's the rest of the car that's eaten up....rockers, wheel arches, fenders and door bottoms. Yours has the hang-on AC too. Is it a 'kuhlmeister'?
