w108 - ether filled temperature sensor
The temperature gauge in my w108 280S, 1969, does not work. It seems that it something happened to when disassembling the head for rebuilt.
I was wondering whether to find a new ether filled system or replace it with an electrical temperature sensor. I have a w114 250C, 1972, which I can use as a parts car. Do you know whether I can use the coupe's temperature gauge in my 280S? Is this also an ether filled sensor or does the coupe have a more modern system? By the way, the cylinder head job was completed and the car now runs great. Thanks.

The temp gauge from the 72 should work. Check to see if it's mechanical, but I think it is.
The usual cause of failure is a kink in the line during removal or installation. They tend to seize in the fitting at the head, and twist up when you unscrew them. Have a car with the one in the coupe -- don't unscrew the clamp fitting until the sensor is free! You can probably swap the later electrical one in easily, but you will need to wire the guage up to the dash, and I cannot help you there. Peter
