Nice looking car. Looks like the two I had, the 220SE and the 230S. Both black with red interior.

If it's an early '63, check the reverse light switch on the shift linkage at the firewall, and if a late '63, the switch is on the top of the trans.

Dual circuit brakes or single? 1963 is a year of change for them. It's referred to as first version or second version. I still have my service manual and valve adjusting tool.

Grease those joints!

It's a first version, which is important to know. The drums are really quite large and have huge fins on them. If you get a wild hair etc, you could convert to a later front suspension and even put the rear axle from a 250 or 280 S or SE as well as the dual circuit brakes. The cars are nearly identical underneath.

OTOH, you could leave it original.

That's a nice looking car.

I'm leaning towards repainting mine and keeping her white but every once-in-a-while I flirt with painting her black.

Can we see the engine please?

Color for finnie repaint...

Finnies have been featured in a number of Mercedes-focused magazines lately...I recall one in a photo spread in (I believe) the British "Mercedes Enthusiast"...the shade was a glossy GREY somewhere between battleship and the once popular MB "anthracite." Looked VERY classy and suave, especially with plain hubcaps (body color) and with blackwall tires. Think it was noted that this had been an embassy car at one time, so this could have been the original color...also great looking with a red "leather" interior.

My Dad got his first Mercedes, when he was assigned to the US embassy in Madrid Spain, It was a black '61 220S. When it got wrecked, he replaced it with a grey '62 220SE. Both had red leather interiors. I would prefer any of those colors to my current 220S faded green paint with tattered chocolate leather, but then my Fintail WAS free!

Didn't the base 220b come without the trim rings on the wheels?
Yours is an Sb right?

My book 'Mercedes-Benz Production Models - 1946-1975' shows slotted trim rings on the 220Sb and 220SEb photos but none on the base 220b.
