Question Should I change the seat color?

I salvaged a complete set of seats from the junkyard out of a 67 230S more than a year ago, thinking I'd hate to see them get thrown away and with hopes of selling them. Now I'm toying with the idea of swapping them with my orange brown Tex seats that are in the fintail now.

What do you think?

The original interior was palomino leather. At some point after the leather seats no doubt disintigrated, the Tex seats were installed. As I said they are orange-ish brown, but I guess the closest they could get to the pinkish tan palomino door panels. It looks all right all in all, but perhaps the black vinyl seats from the 230 would look striking with the graphite grey exterior and palomino door panels.

So, give me your thoughts. I think it would look okay, but I feel like maybe I'm defiling the purity of the original. I don't want to upset the balance of what is right and proper in the fintail universe if you know what I mean.

My Fintail seats are still the original chocolate brown leather (whats left of it!) Too bad you couldn't get the matching door panels. Black is an easy color to match though. Perhaps you could get your door panels dyed. Or, if you don't want to risk messing up yours, find some replacement door panels and, if they aren't black, dye them.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I say change em to what looks good. Its already been changed. MB Tex might not be as nice as leather, but it lasts forever and keeps on looking good.

The door panels from the donor car were butchered already. Besides, the palomino door panels might provide some relief from the heavy color combo of grey/black.

I should get my digi-cam set up so I can do some side by side pics and then post a vote on the two!

TN-W124- I checked out the link, your seats looked really great.

I wouldn't dye the original door panels, though my 124 has pink palomino leather seats and I don't really care for that color. . . I'd consider that if I weren't facing the possibility of selling it.

RED...... every gray Vintage MB should have RED interior, just my opinion.

And yes, you can successfully change color of the entire existing interior using vinyl spray paint available at autozone or wherever. Several thin coats of paint would get best results. Am thinking it takes nothing more than couple hours to pull all seats and door panels. Then you just have to mask the seat hinges with tape before spraying em Red.

ACK!!!

Sorry 240DieselDog, I just cannot get into that color. Maybe a silver and red SL but that is about it. IMO the worst interior color, esp with gray.

Please don't take it personally

That's not Palomino, it's Bamboo. Different color, although similar. If you get Palomino, it won't match.

Colors changed in 73 or 74.

You can put anything in there you want. However, if you sell the car and have "painted" the seats and door covers, the next owner may hate you.

I would like to strangle the idot who changed the color of my 280. That "bright" blue is impossible to match, and I'm gonna have to buy MORE leather to replace the seat back covers that are otherwise just fine. Crappy job, too -- the original navy blue shows all around the edges.

i guess that makes 2 of us. red inside on a black car to me is sweet. my brother swapped his tan seats for black, and a black on black finny looks great!

The original seats were palomino, since the doors panels are that color I make this assumption. The replacement vinyl seats are the orange brown, is this what you mean by bamboo?

Ya, I could never paint the seats. I have a set of black ones separate and complete.

I'll check the Heckflosse site for the proper names.

I too would prefer a grey or black Fintail with red leather, if only because most of my Benzes have been green, including my current, faded green 220S with tattered chocolate leather (but then it WAS free!)

Palomino was only used after 74 or around then, the previous "tan" color is Bamboo. They are NOT the same color, although similar.

I prefer the Bamboo, I've never like the Palomino all that much, especially the Tex, which turns flesh color instead of a "true" palomino color (if you know horses, you know what I mean -- golden tan).

Hell, if I had Palomino or Bamboo door panels that faded to flesh-tone pink..... without hesitation I'd use some of that vinyl color-color spray paint. It's really pretty good stuff that i've used successfully on center console pad for 220Sb and on 116 sunvisors. Hear of one guy who did his Karman Ghia seats with great results. Am willing to bet it would work wonders on water stained headliners too.
