SL500- unhappy with Michellins, need new tire suggestions.

Hey guys, SL500 with the AMG staggered wheel package, front: 245/40-18 and rear 275/35-18. Last year I bought my Michellin Pilot Sports (Not the A/s) from Tirerack. I was VERY happy with the ride, much better than the Kumho's I had before.

OK so I put about 24k of VERY easy miles on these tires, no peeling out or taking corners too fast, mostly highway driving. After 24k my tire shop tells me they are shot, belts showing, etc!! I would have expected to get 40k out of them, but having them shot at 24k is kind of a let down after spending close to $300 per tire.

Anyway while I loved the ride, I don't think I am going to spend the $300 per tire again for just 24k miles. I would like some suggestions on a new summer tire, I would even consider an all season performance if it was very close to performing like a full summer tire, but I know that is wishful thinking. My cousin does have the Dunlop P2000 (sp?) on his SL and loves them, so I may consider them.

Suggest away!!!

tires and wheels

I just purchased a set of tires and wheels from the "Tire Rack". Continental Conti-Extreme Contact and the 8 Hole w140 type wheel. It "updates my 91 350SD very nicely. The car originally had Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus. These tires tracked straight and I got good service from them. May I add that I shopped around and TR was the best deal.

Thanx guys, well I can chalk this up to my own ignorance. The Michellins were only rated for 20k, sigh, so technically I got an extra 4k out of them. Anyway I ordered a set of Michellin Pilot Sport A/S which the rep said I should get 35-40k out of, they are being installed right now. Unfortunately tirerack sent me the wrong brake shoes!!!

Brenden or brennan, I forget. The rear pads where OK, but the front ones arrived like they were already used, and they did not have the hole for the sensor. I still have them in the box ready to return. My shop told me they completely sent the wrong ones so I ended up paying full price for the pads. THank god the rotors and the rear pads fit.
