Graspic DS-2 vs. Pilot Alpin PA2

All:

Okay, time to get new snows for the E420. I wore out the old Artic Alpins. I am looking for either 205/60/15 or 215/60/15 to go on the stock 8 holes for the winter. I'm in Indianapolis, so we'll get at least a moderate amount of snow and ice. I'd like to keep them fairly quiet, and at least a little sporty looking. What about either of the above? Any opinions? Luke?

Thanks,
Bob

Bob,

Have you considered the Nokian WRs? They are all-season tires, but also fully rated for severe winter service (snowflake/mountain symbol), just like snows. They perform well in the snow, but the real surprise is how nicely they handle in the dry. I've ordered another set in that size for our TE 4Matic. Unfortunately, Tire Rack doesn't (yet) carry them, but, until Tire Rack does, they can be ordered and drop shipped from a number of good suppliers, one of my favorites being Waukegan Tire at 1-847-336-5305 (Dave).

Regards,
Bob

Luke and others,

Thanks for the opinion about the Graspic. What, then, about the comparison between the Dunlop Winter sport M3 vs. the Pilot PA2's?

Not so sure about the Nokian's. I usually like to get tires from The Tirerack, or locally.

Bob

I'm like you, Bob. I also prefer to buy from Tire Rack. That's where I get all my summer tires.

Do a search for Nokian in this forum. I suspect you'll find that they are among the best for winter conditions. The WR is special, as it is the only all season tire, as far as I know, that is also rated for "severe winter service." I only mention Waukegan Tire, as their prices are reasonable and Dave is a real gentleman.

The winter sport M3 is a more versatile tire offering better ice and snow traction while the Pilot alpin PA2 offers better ride quality and dry road response and by the way, the Dunlop is what is recommended by Mercedes
