will following tire and rim combination fit my W124 1994 E320coupe:Mb rim part# B6 64 705 18 (71/2Jx17H2) ET(offset) 37 with 225/45 ZR 17 DUNLOP SP 9000. i only could find ET(offset) 42 in the car's papers. will this difference in offset cause problems in this application???

the offset should be ok. The tires may be a little wide and may rub, some cars they do some cars they don't.

If the tires rub you need to go with a 215/45/17.

I have 17x7.5 with an offset of 30 and 225/45/17 and mine don't rub except under full load in the rear, and I never have passengers back there anyway.

I have 17x7.5 ET37 on my early W124 right now. Fits perfect. I have the front fender lips rolled slightly, and also have the AMG fender spacer installed, which is needed to help prevent rubbing on the wide fender body moulding behind the front tire. I have 225/45/17 tires and would recommend sticking with that size, a 215 is narrow for a 7.5 wheel.

Looking Good

Looking good gsxr (Dave). I checked your website and saw all of the pictures of your freshly washed blue 1987 300D Sportline with 252K miles. It looks like you are taking very good care of that W124.

I liked the shots down the side of the car, so that I could see how the tires align with the edge of the fenders. Do you think you could take one more picture of the front wheel, so that I can see if your wheel and tire are centered in the fender well? I am just very curious now about how the wheels are positioned on other W124s.

I just have to get some spacers so that I can get some 225s.

Thanks for the great picture

That is the money shot for me. Thank you for showing me what I asked to see. The wheel appears to be more symmetrically placed within the fender than mine is, although it looks like the tire may be slightly closer to back of the fender. I suppose the more symmetrical placement helps you squeeze on those 225s.

Your car doesn’t look quite as low in that photo. Was that picture taken before the new springs or is it just the angle of the photo or the way the car is parked?

Remember that your late model wide fender moulding wraps around into the wheel well, making mine look like it's farther away from the rear of the fender. If I had your wide moulding, the tire would appear closer, probably like yours is. The fender spacer should help with this. I suspect 225's might get you rubbing on the top metal edge though, requiring a little fender roll to clear.

And yeah, that shot was when the springs were first installed. I think it was 14.0-14.25" back then. It's since settled down to 13.5", lower than I'd like. I'm not sure if it's just the springs, or if perhaps the struts lose a little pressure as they age and that also lets it settle (I doubt it). All the other rubber parts up front are relatively new (2-3 years, 20-30kmi).

Swaybars are next

Thanks again for all of your thoughtful insight about the W124. As usual, I think you are probably right about everything. I learn a little more every day. Hopefully I will be able to use all of the information to get my car set-up exactly the way I like. I want to get the big swaybars and then maybe try the spacers so that I can have 225s some day. Thanks again.

I just took the 17s off my car and I'm actually thinking of 'maybe' I could use 225/45/17s in the back and 205/50/17s up front.

Because they are about the same in terms of rolling diameter and the 205s will not rub - I don't think.

The 205s might be too narrow for the 7.5" wheel though. But, it seems that 7.5" is the max safe width for 205/50/17s...

I suppose I could get the ET42 17" AMG Monoblocks somehow and fit 225s w/o a problem. But I really like the way the Evos look...

225/45/17 fits fine up front... what offset are your wheels? You have the W201 Evos, right? (I forget those dimensions... 17x7.5 ET-something, no?)
