240D tires and rim question....

Hey....

I'm not sure if you read about me hitting the curb a few days ago. I changed the guide rod and the car developed shakes while driving. One of you geniuses on this site mentioned that the mag aluminum wheels can get bent so as a last resort before I was about to bring it to the machanic, I decided to throw on a spare tire in place of the bent one (which I didn't know that it was bent). No shakes at all. Drives perfectly except that it needs an alignment which was needed for months now.

Anyway,

I need a new mag wheel and I would like to buy new tires. I looked in the manual and it says a size but it is missing the middle digit (175 SR 14) I tried locating this type of tire but had no luck surfing various sites. The tires that are currently on the car are 185 75 14. Is that size the right one for the 240D and is it right for the mag wheels ? In the backyard I have my donor car sitting on BRAND NEW BF GOODRIDGE tires but the size is different since they are from steel wheels (185 70 14) Can I use them ?

Thanks,

Kamil

PS. If anybody has a good mag wheel in great shape for sale contact me.

tires

kamil, believe my 240d came with the 175 - 14 tires. That is a metric designation I believe or just called metric tires. Tire dealer suggested I replace with same size and i did.You can buy them without too much difficulty in the states.(in comparison) Hard item to locate in canada it seems. Possibly no exact equivelent in north american sizes. Check with a tire guy. Mine suggested it was important. On the other hand using what you have on hand should be okay as well.

The 175 SR 14 tire has the same rolling diameter as a 195/70 and is thus something like a 78-series.

The stock alloy rim is 5.5 inch by 14 and will be an exact replacement with a 195/70/14 tire, only steel rims came with 175's on 240D. If you want to go to a 205/70/14 your odometer will be about 3 mph slow at 65 mph on an '83 240D automatic.

re

Hi, if yor rims are 5,5x14,go for the BFGoodrich
I believe w123 came with 175/70/14 tyres on 5,5Jx14 H2 rims, but since they`re a bit hard to find nowadays, most drivers here ride on 185/70/14. Anyway, in the Michelin catalogues 185/70/14 on a 5,5Jx14 rim is the "perfect match"...
Good Luck,

The 175's were a 78 series tire on the steel rims on 240D's and 185's were 300D's with steel rims and they are not a perfect match on the alloy rim. The alloy rims came with 195/70/14. If you use a 190/70/14 it will be the same size as original tire that came with a alloy wheel on a 240D in US.

70 series tires are getting kind of few and far between to find and the 175/85/14 that came on the steel rims had poor handling and a rough ride compared to the 195/70's that came on the alloy wheels. I just resently replaced an original spare tire for my 240 and it was a 195/70/14.

Technically the 240D wheel in the US (known most easily by its 5.5 in width) is a stamped aluminum wheel, although it looks like a "steel" wheel. These wheels are actually very very light, which is important for the anemic 240D.

According to the service information, there is a "steel" 6-inch wheel used on certain 300Ds with wheel covers (hubcaps) that is also aluminum. Can someone with such a car see if this is true?

Ted the manual dated '85 list steel 5.5 & alloy 5.5 on 240D, the 300D that I had for resale had steel rims and full rim sized rather plane wheel cover's. I have looked at another 240D with steel rimes with hub caps and trim rings on 3 wheels and a bare steel rim on the other. Owner said he interupted kids steeling them.
