500SL rims on W126 - new lug bolts required?

Hello all,

Just obtained a set of wheels (225/55/R16) from a '92 500SL for my '86 560SEL. The wheels fit nicely on the hub; but as I was putting on lug bolts and hand tightened them, they appears to not to be flushed into the wheel holes like they do on the original rims. The threads usage seems to be the same, just that the heads stick out more than they should. What am I missing here or there are different types of lug bolts ?
Please help!

Thanks in advance,
Frank.

Yep, there are short and long bolts depending on the offset and type of wheel, you can usually find the diff types on ebay etc...

Exclamation Watch out!

I have those wheels for my 1985 300SD. If you have wheel weights, on the inner side of the rim they will be removed by the steering rod on the wheel's first revolution!

I went with 5mm spacers on all four wheels and 5mm lenghtened lug bolts as well.

My lugs are the short style, and I prefer that look to the flush with the surface type.

Regards.

Wait a minute I tried to put those wheels on my 87 SDL, they came off of a 92 SL320. They were to wide and would rub, 8in wide (ET34?). Are you running spacers? Those wheels shouldn't fit.

DANGER! Don't run spacers with longer bolts they could shear off and you could lose a wheel! You need to run proper hub centric spacers, H&R makes them about $300 for a car. The lug bolts don't support the wheel the center of the hub does.
