I would like to fit a set of 16x8 ET34 15 hole 1992 SL oem rims on my 1983 w126 380SEL. Could I just use a spacer (10mm?) to bring them to the right offset, which I believe is 25mm for 7 or 7.5in rims ? Will the 8in width be okay?

Has anyone else done a similar conversion for a w126?

I read one post in this forum that the 1990 r129 SL had a 22mm offset. Is that correct? If so, then what year did it change to 34mm?

FYI I currently have a set of 16in chromed Sentras on this car with 225/60/16 tires. Not sure of the rim width or offset but the car drives very well with these. Only problem is the chrome peeling off the rims, otherwise the car also looks great with these larger wheels/tires.

Looking forward to your inputs,
Dominic Godfrey

Any offset between ET20 and ET24 will work fine with an 8" wide wheel. You can actually buy 8 X 16 with ET24 eight holes wheels for your car. So unless you are dead set on the SL wheels you may be better off buying the correct wheels to begin of. By the way the 225/60 is too tall, try 225/55, 235/50, 225/50 or 245/45-16. Good luck.

In what respect are 225/60 tires too high? I've had this size on my current set of 16in wheels (not sure what width or offset) for 4yrs/30k miles without any problems.

Are they just too high when mounted on 8in wide rims, or are they theoretically too high for all 16in rims.

What he means by too high, is the tire size itself is a little too tall. Your original tires size should have been 205/70/14 which is about 25.3" in diameter, to keep the same rolling circumfrence, so that your speedomater is accurate, you would want to stick with a 215/55/16 like the current E-class, or go a little wider with 235/50/16 performance tires. They are the exact same size in overall diameter. You are about 1.3" taller.

As for using spacers, I would not suggest it because it puts to much torsional force on the lug bolts and not enough hub contact for a strong hold. In simple language, No mercedes owner really will recommend a spacer because the way a Mercedes is built, they are too tight of a car, to be taking short cuts with.
