Excessive Tire Pressure

Why is it that tire dealers, many in my experience, over inflate your tires when they install or rotate them? I had my 235/45/17s rotated a few weeks ago and I checked my tire pressure today; low 40s all around. MB says 28F-32R. I checked my wife's new 225/40/18s and they were all around 50 psi. Same tire dealer, same brand of tires, I don't get it.

Because they very unwisely decide to inflate the tires to the max tire pressure listed on the tire sidewall instead of finding the label which states the manufacturer recommended pressures.

Because no one checks their tire pressure. They probably just pump them up giving the tires more time to leak down to the right pressure.

I don't think the sticker on your vehicle is the correct one for your tyre size (unless US market uses different pressures). Most MB's I see with wheels other than those fitted from factory dont have the tyre pressure sticker changed so the recommendations are wrong in those cases.

From memory the front would be around 34psi and rears 36psi for the average driver in a W210 with that tyre combination.

Tyre shops usually just pump 'em up, they don't care fi you need tyres earlier then the normal milage.....

I don't know why they would overinflate new tires, but most tire shops and quicky lubes don't account for the heat of the tires. I don't think you have to wait overnight to get an accurate reading cold, but inflating to spec on a non-cold tire will always be wrong. Measure them cold and inflate them cold.
