Wanted: Lug Nut wrench

I have CLK 16" rims on my 1989 300e. However, the car did not come with a lug wrench.

The lug heads seem very large...so in addition to the correct size the "socket" would have to be fairly thin-walled.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Lee,

You could try a 14mm impact socket on a breaker bar. Impact sockets tend to be a little thinner than normal sockets.

regards,
BW

Yes. My mistake the impact socket should be 17mm and not 14 mm.

I think I may have found the issue...apparently the lugs have chrome cap covers on them..

I need a special tool to get them off..

....what a newbie.

that's funny,

I like those lug nut caps, help clean it clean in there.

they just pop out, try to use a plastic hook to pull them out, I think they come with a metal exaggerated fish hook device - to pull them off

do you think something like coat hanger wire would do the trick... ?

don't know what you mean by a "plastic hook"

coat wire hanger should do it.

I just wanted you to try a material softer than the wheel and the lug cap so you wouldn't have a chance of scratching.

Ebay has many a mercedes lug wrench. Or most internet parts dealers, for that matter. Pretty common item.

A more elegant solution is a Craftsman 18 inch breaker bar, and a 17 mm 1/2 inch drive deep socket. A short extension maybe 3 to 6 inch wouldn't hurt either. On both my cars I have to be a bit careful not to hit my knuckes against the fender lip; luckily the breaker bar pivots a bit to allow clearance.
But yes, a MB lug nut wrench will work also
Here is what Performance Products' "tool" looks like for removing those chrome plastic caps...they look almost like big tweezers, with the ends about 17 mm apart...
