Kumhos for 126 (300SDL)
I need a set of tires for three seasons/year (I have michelen snows for winter - fantastic tires). The cheapest tire on Tirerack is also one of the best. Is anybody using the Kumho HP4 716 on their 126?
Thanks Dave

Dave,
I have them on my 124 300E and I like the tire. Quiet, smooth and excellent price. I also have them on my daughters Audi A4. I had a problem putting Japanese tires on a German car but would do it again.

Kumhos are actually Korean, not Japanese. Not that it makes much difference.
A Michelin, Continental, or Pirelli isn't necessarily made in Europe. I've seen various such tires made in North America, South America and South Africa. Probably soon to be coming from China, if not already. - JimY |

I had them on my SDL. Really liked 'em, and the price was right. They are a non clam-shell tire, but I am under the impression that this is not the case with all Kumhos so look when you buy. However, now Moby the SDL is sold!
I put new Yoko Avid Tourings on my 300TD and reallllly like them a lot. Those Ecsta HP4 716s were not avail in my size, so I went up. good luck k

thumbs down from me on the kumho's! put them on my wifes camry and they only lasted 25000 miles.
my experience with tires lead me to conclude you get what you pay for...........go with michelins! |

No experience with subject tires, but seems to me, based on what I have read in the Tire Rack reviews and other reviews, Michelin does have longer tread life in certain, not all, tire models. The trade-off for is in wet handling. Harder rubber compound equals longer tread life.
Then there is the price problem. Michelins are probably more than twice as expensive as the Kumho's. To me the performance is way more important than some small difference in cost per mile. I have been running Dunlop SP-5000's on my '92 300E Sportline, three sets so far. About $70 - 75 each at TireRack. Thinking of trying the BF Goodrich G-Force Sport with a V speed rating, $63 each. Not to save money, just to try something different. The G-Force tires have received some very complimentary reviews. Steve |

I first put a set of Kumho's on my 2002 Toyota Rav4 last summer and they were a huge improvement in ride over the factory Toyos for half the price. On the Rav, they don't have as good a wet grip as I'd like but that hasn't been an issue with the Mercedes. It's pretty tough to beat the price. Bill |
