Tire Siping??

I called up Less Schwab today to get a price on four 195/70/14 tires and she asked if I wanted to get them "siped" for an additional $11.25 ea, say what, is that like muffler grease? She said, "tiny slits are cut in the tread and makes a huge improvement in traction" and when I asked her about the down side, she said "there is none",......OK, I dont live where theres lots of talk down at the Chatter Box Cafe, about traction tires so is this something that I should know about when shopping for tires

Heres an intereating write up, no downside?http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/sipe/

Back in my SCCA racing days we use to use those heated knifes to make rain tires out of racing slicks.

I would not screw around with modern tires. Just what you need some pimple faced kid at the shop cutting up your new tires!!

depending the type of tire(tyre?) i see no reason to have a street tire siped. there are some really aggressive street tires that look well cut from the factory. i would think the factory knows what they are doing when they groove the tires at the plant.

are you playing ricer racer on the side? if so maybe its worth the winnings. are you driving on the street and enjoying your cart? fuh get it. chunking and warrenty prob with that supplier comes to my mind also.

If you want more traction get a better tire. Try a Dunlop SP9000 or a Yoko AVS. Just try to break an SP9000 lose.

Modern tires are designed by engineers with computer aided design and nearly 100 years of research data. The guy at the tire store works with intuition, superstition, fear and ignorance, your choice.

Hmmmm, a common practice where I live. Much better to stud the tires if you intend to drive on snow.....

Major downside is they probally wont last as long as the original tire.....

Gonna pave your driveway?

After lengthy crossexamination of one of Les's best when he tried to talk me into having our new Toyos siped, Les's best did admit that siping is not advised for cars frequently driven on gravel.

You know the road I live on.

I know your driveway.

No sipe, nor sir.

Sounds like a medical procedure to me, did the salesman there have a sample case, maybe a few magnets and some Snake Oil?
