Why do you say that? I got my first MB at 16, paid for myself. What would makes you ready for an older MB? Just curious...

When one knows better than to tack on 22'' chrome rims, one is ready for an older MB.

22'' rims will make that car less safe and less valuable. What are the benefits, other than showing off?

Does it matter, if that's what he wants? He paid for the car, he owns it. Some people do a lot of things that devalue a car. Some people repaint, some people add better stereo systems, some people lower their cars, some people put stripes on, some people take out a mercedes engine in favor of a ford or chevy engine for there reasons. That devalues the car. When safety comes to play, if he has the proper discs, pads, etc I'm sure he won't run into any problems. If he wants to show off, then let him. Why buy chrome rims for a new or old Mercedes? Some prefer the look, would you label that as showing off? Take an exotic SEC for example, http://www.mbcoupes.com/memberscars/H/jameyhaley/jameyhaley.htm
Would you say that's tacky? Some would, some wouldn't, but maybe since he went against the norm and painted it yellow, put in a nice audio system, that "he does not need" then he is too old/young for an older MB? I'm sure you have seen the pic of the 560SEC hotrod as well, with the big supercharger and all on it. Is he too old or young as well?

I am just not understanding, why so many people are putting the original poster down for something that interests him.

That is the original post.

1. He asked for advice. If someone just wants the answer that they like, don't ask for opinions on a discussion forum.

2. It's not even his car!

People can do what they want with their cars, but when you ask for opinions, that's what you get.

That car in the link is a joke and the owner should be keelhauled.

PS Chrome rims (or is that 'rimz'?) won't pass inspection in Germany because the chroming process weakens the metal. In other words, they are illegal because they make the cars less safe.

Talking

Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?

I seen you 'round for a long long time
I really 'membered you when you drink my wine

Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?

I seen you walkin' down in Chinatown
I called you but you could not look around

Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?

I bring my money to the welfare line
I see you standing in it every time

Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?

The color of your skin don't matter to me
As long as we can live in harmony

Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?

I'd kinda like to be the President
so I can show you how your money's spent

Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?

Sometimes I don't speak too bright
but yet I know what I'm talking about

Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?

I know you're working for the CIA
they wouldn't have you in the Mafia

Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?

Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?

Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?

Why can't we be friends?
Why can't we be friends?

Sick 560SEC! I love AMG wheels. Dropped a bit with an AMG body kit and that thing would look so nice, drool.

I think the reason people are disgusted by him is because he may ruin a beautiful car, that any one of us could take care of a lot better.

Also, the fact that the poster is a dimwit also plays a part. 22's? It's gotta be a joke.

Again- I dont care about his plans to have dad buy rims or whatever. However I do not believe you can easily get "proper discs, pads etc" without a major investment. Who makes easily obtainable bigger discs that will handle 22 rims for a older MB? Then of course you'll need different calipers and pads- in other words you'd need to completely redo the brake system... guesstimate the cost of that done right and I'd bet you come up with a total more than the cost of the rims and tires- which together (rims, tires and brake system) may very well cost more than the purchase price of the car. I dont believe for a minute anyone who wants 22's is interested in others safety to the tune of $3-4K when they could spend nothing and the rims would still fit. To make a long story short- the rims are a life threatening road hazard, period.

Would dubs (not 22s) fit the car has already been answered (i think). The issue of the tradition & "integrity" of the car is a point that leighton0h may have missed (amongst the ridicule and namecalling) although on his car that may be secondary to what is fashionable among his peer group. The car in question here tho is not his car.
So to the poster I would ask-- don't you think it is extremely self-centered to customize your father's car to look good to your peers when you drive it, while he may look foolish to both your peers as well as his when he drives it? (And i'm assuming that he will drive it more than you.)
If he asks about a suggestion on clothes would you dress him in a throwback jersey with baggys and Tims? Hopefully you respect him more than that.
As an alternative, if he feels the need for a more modern look, you could suggest some modern MB or AMG 17s or 18s that he would be comfortable with that would uphold the tradition of the car and enhance his mature, yet stylish, image. You may even be surprised at the responses that you get when you drive his car instead of yours.
I work with young people in a gang violence prevention & intervention project and get complements daily on this stock 300D with the original (scarred up) rims on it. Once when i remarked to some kids that i needed to get some new rims, one of the OGs just looked at me and said "keep it classy, Old School". Which of course i intend to.
If you have to "convince" your father then you aren't doing anything but encouraging him to "fake the game" (for your benefit) because if it was really him-- he would have brought the suggestion to you. (Like, has he ever asked to rock your benzondubs once in awhile??)
How do you feel when he tries to "convince" you to 'pull your pants up off your ass' or 'turn that damn music down' (with all that profanity!)? Not too cool huh? Think about it-- better yet-- discuss it with him in a 2 sided conversation. I'd be interested to hear the outcome.
Meanwhile i have my new rims awaiting shipment now. I got some 10 hole 16s off a '99 E320 and podna I'm skrait!
