92 190E with vibrating tires/wheels

When I drive 50 and above I feel the wheels are vibrating. I feel it through the stirring wheel. If I drive slow a can somewhat feel a slow vibration, as if the tires/wheels are warped.

When the tires are brand new, the vibration is almost zero. I can drive 70+ mph.

When the tires are close to bald, that is when the symptom is very evident!

The tire wear pattern is on the side of the tires is it interleaves with thread, no thread, thread, no thread, etc.

I know it isn't a balancing problem.

Could it be the stablizer? I have about 195K miles on the car.

Joseph

Tire Issues

I recommend rotating the tires regularly. A good-quality, 4-wheel alignment, might be called for. In general, though, tire performance deteriorates with age/miles, and often even rebalancing cannot remove all the imperfections to a sufficient degree to provide completely smooth operation. Be sure the ball joints and tie-rod ends are OK; check the steering dampener if so equipped.
Typically my tires get shaky to the point I replace them before the tread is completely worn out. There may not be anything wrong with the car, in which case a new set of quality tires will work wonders.

I know something is wrong. When I get new tires, the shaking stops. When they get close to changing, I see that the cause of the shaking is due to MAJOR, and I mean MAJOR, uneven tire wear.

How do I check if the tie rods are okay? Is the steering dampner the same as the steering stabilizer?

Joseph
