C 280 Shock and Spring Suggestions

With 168K on my 1999 C280, I'm sensing that my suspension is in need of replacement shocks (and possibly springs)? It just feels a little loosey goosey and clunky (technical terms!). Visually, the springs look like they are rusting and flaking away layers of metal and shocks are original.

What I'd like to do is to recreate that good old new car ride, not too stiff, and yet upgrade from stock (I think). I'd prefer a soft yet responsive set-up...too much to ask?

You suggestions are appreciated.

BP

Soft and responsive may be too much to ask. There is almost always a compromise between performance and comfort. I think it is worth it, however, to give up a little comfort to gain the very secure feeling that you get from a slightly firmer suspension.

My friend's 190E tightened up very nicely with the Bilstein Heavy Duty shocks. His car was very sloppy before he replaced the shocks. He has 270K miles and he did not replace the springs. The HD shocks did increase the ride height a little, so be aware that it could also happen to you. With worn shocks, your car may be sagging a bit, so the ride height could increase with new shocks, especially if you go with the "Heavy Duty" Bilsteins.

The HD shocks are firmer than stock, but it may be nice to add the firmness to compliment the other softened components of your suspension. I think my friend's car probably rides like a new car, even though the shocks are firmer, since so many other things are softer on his very worn suspension.

My car is definitely firmer than stock, because I went with Eibach springs, Bilstein HD shocks, and plus one wheels that are 16" x 7.5" ET37 with 205/55/16 tires. I prefer the firmer set-up, but you have to accept that there is some loss of comfort for almost any improvement in suspension performance, except maybe bigger swaybars.

I think it might be like always going back to that same bad relationship with an ex girlfriend.
You feel you love them too much, or you are just too stupid to know any better.
