Wheel refinishing ? Powdercoat 1st, then paint ?
I will be blasting away the old finish (glass or plastic beads), and am wondering if I should powdercoat the wheel first, and then paint, or just paint ?
What would be a good powdercoat ? What's a good primer for the Wurth Silver wheel paint ? Thanks, :-) neil |

I just used a sanding sponge (fine grit) on my wheels, then straight silver wheel paint from the local auto parts store (not Wurth). Several coats of paint (VERY thin each time), then several coats of clear coat, again VERY thin each time. My wheels look brand new and haven't faded or chipped a bit in 6 months.

The process is this : shot blast wheels with aluminium oxide first. Then, powder silver (or black or any other colour). Then powder lacquer goes on top - it's called polyester lacquer. All AMG/MB wheels come that way from the factory (except those which have a polished finish, like a version of the EVO II's). The lacquer is crucial to give the added protection to the powder coat. ========== Is it true ? :-) neil |
