shredded tire, help please

Hi,
I have a 1987 300 E and I was going into a driveway kinda fast and the tire seemed to hit the wheel well. There was a noise and i noticed there was metal which is part of the flapped in part that was protruding and shredded my tire. My question is I do notice that the clearance on that side seems very slighlty less than the other side, maybe 1/4 inch. Could there be a shock or suspension problem or was it just the protruding metal. The cars ride is fine. Thanks.

Do you have standard size tires and wheels?

Take off both front wheels and compare wheel wells. They're pretty symmetrical. Is there something on the right side that isn't on the left side?

ride height?

I had the same problem but my tires and rims are oversized. For the 107 and others there is a data sheet that has the ride height. I fixed rubbing rear wheels by changing the shocks and rear sub frame bushings. Shocks helped since the gas leaked out of one but the bushings cured it. I'm not sure if the E has the saem set-up. As the springs get sacked the next bump rubber pad would help. I think I could use it now. Good luck.

sounds

to me like the metal hanging down is the culprit. cut it off or bend it back where it belongs and you will solve the problem, imho. also see why it was hanging out.
