175 Sr 14????? 220/8 (1971)

I would like to put a set of tires on this car, I have rescued it and the rubber is trashed. I can't seem to cross the SR to anything???
I would also like to find whitewalls but don't want to get into major bucks, any thoughts?

I think 185 70 14 is the closest to the original size. I used 195 70 14 when I had my 115 240D.

for purposes

of calculating diameter, a 175 sr 14 is actually a 175/85. when not mentioned the 85% aspect ratio is understood.

Tom is correct. 185/80R14 is very close to the original diameter, 185/70r14 is not. I'm amazed at the number of people who think 185/70r14 is a direct replacement for 175r14 or for the 185r14 that came on my W116.

Discount tire claims the W113 SL came with 185/80-14 tires. They don't have them, but I think I will put the 195/75-14s on my 250 sedan. According to Discount Tires size calculator they will be almost exactly the same as the 185/80-14 as far as rotational speed.

That would be great if you could find that size.

Try searching Tirerack.com by size for 185-80-14.

Now try 185-70-14.

The undesignated sidewall ratio is 82%. Dunlop has a pretty good information page at http://dunlop.buffnet.net/tt101_sizing.html .

Hope this helps,

Of the ten + years I owned my 75 240D, I put three sets of 195-75-14. These were cheap tires (4/$100) from Discount Tires or NTB.

OK so now I am really confused, the original question was what does the 175SR14 compare to in this day and age

The answer is..... it depends.

185-80-14 can be found at Coker Tire for $180 each + shipping. Too rich for me.

185-70-14 is more readily available and will cost less. Not easy to find locally, but they are out there if you look for them.

When I had my 115 240D I used 195-70-14, which is what MB switched to on 123 cars when the original tire size became obselete. That size you can find almost anywhere. Some guys use 195-75-14 because they are readily available anywhere and cost less. Any of those sizes will work, although the farther you stray, the more speedometer error you may have.

If it was me, I would use 195-70-14. Call me a cheapskate, but that is close enough to the original size that you as a driver cannot tell the difference. The only caution I would make would be to avoid the really cheap tires. I had some Wal-Mart Uniroyals which were so weak they gave the car a fishtailing sensation.

175SR14 is a Euro tire and todays replacement is 185-75R-14.
As close a diameter comparison as possible. No speedo change.
Next closest is 195-70R-14, but speedo difference will be slight.
