I've been looking at replacing the OEM rims on my 1987 300E. I'm really interested in a 17x8 rims but I've read here that I shouldn't go beyond 7.5. If the car isn't lowered, and I'm using 215-45-17 tires will I have a rubbing problem? How much should I expect the tires to fill up the wheel well?

17 X 7.5 is the way to go; I'd run 215 or 225/50-17. They'll fill up the wheel wells very well. 8.0 will rub, or stick out way too far to look right, IMHO.
Good luck! ------------------ Best regards, Michael '92 500E '88 300TE |

Just a little bit of info from personal experience: My 1987 300E W124 -
Replaced stock rims with 16X7.5 Borbet Replica II's - running 225/50 16's. No problem for about 2 years. Then I lowered the car with Eibach's Pro Kit. The rears started rubbing on the fender. I had them folded up, now it clears just fine. Here's the weird part though... I just put 17X7.5 AMG Monoblock II's on last night... running 225/45 17's. Look great. Clears all the fenders, no rubbing whatsoever with the lowered springs. But the tire/wheel looks THINNER in width than my 16X7.5's. They are now 1/2 inch INSET from the edge of the fender. They (the 16's) used to be all the way out flush to the edge, it looked great. I am guessing it is the offset of the AMG's? Perhaps they mount differently? If this is the case, is it possible for me to go up to 235/45 17? Thanks, Jay Huang 1987 300E Eibach Pro Kit Bilstien Sport Shocks AMG 17" Monoblocks |

The 86' AMG Hammer had 8 X 17 with 215/45 and 235/45, front and rear respectively. The fender lips were trimmed for clearance. The setup was flushed with the body, did not stick out at all. Tire pressures were 38 and 42 PSI. I don't know the offset but I would guess they are around 30mm.
By the way, TSW make an 8 X 17 with 30mm and they recommend 215/45 and 235/40 for tires. Good luck. |

Thanks everyone...I had my heart set on the AMG Monoblock II (2 piece)rim at NR Auto. They only come in 17x8 w/ 35mm offset. I'm willing to spend the dough but I want something that's exactly right..If 8" width means that the tires will stick out beyond the body of the car...I don't want 'em. Anybody know of any good 2 piece rims for the 300E?

I really don't know if 17X8's would stick out or not on the 87 300E. If they can be mounted flush, heck, I'd just go ahead and return the set I have and get 17X8's. I can tell you this though... 17X7.5 AMG Monoblock II's have a comfortable clearance horizontally, I can see how an extra half-inch in width could fit very nicely. If you do, please let me know, I'd be very interested to know if it works.

8 X 18 with ET35 will not stick out. You probably don't have to do any fender lips modification either. Make sure you have enough clearance for the shocks and the tie rods. If money is no object, go for Kenisis, Forgeline, HRE, or Fikse wheels. They can make it to any size and offset you want and they are much stronger and lighter than any cast wheels. I have Forgeline on my car and they are great. Good luck. |

It'll be a very tight fit...I mean, my 500E is a W124 with 8" wide rims, but all four fenders are flared & rolled. I was able to stuff 17 X 8.5s in there though.
That extra half an inch is quite a bit, and can cause some really annoying problems with rubbing, based on the tires you choose (they actually vary quite a bit brand to brand). If you go 8", rolled fenders are likely required. Good luck! ------------------ Best regards, Michael '92 500E '88 300TE |

225/50/16 on 7.5 works well enough on any stock suspension car. In fact, it usually offers up so much grip that your next best step is to go into the suspension for more roll control. For the sake of being able to rotate and overall handling I'd rather stick with 225/50/16 or 225/45/17 on all 4 corners than stagger it. Besides, very few 6-cyl W124's have problems breaking the rear end loose with 225's. In any case, lighter and stronger is better so if you can afford it...go for it. In my experience you are better suited to buy a better quality tire in a slightly higher profile than a low-buck tire in a "rubber-band" sidewall height.
Hope this helps...Lee |

Hey Newbie,
Just came across a 1997 MBZ catalog. It list the following for the AMG Monoblock II: E-Class '86-95 7.5 x 17' (tire size 225/45R17) Part # B6 602 0086 $490 per wheel www.superbuytire.com sells them for $349. www.TireRack.com sells them for $359. (note: compare shipping charges when you call.) Just a word of caution. The wheels sold at NRAuto are not "real" AMG wheels. They are AMG "styled" wheels. In other words they are "knock-offs" or replicas. I am not saying that they are not of high quality just saying that they are not real AMG's. These two NRAuto replica wheels are also sold at www.bekkers.com . 1. Monoblock II Style 2. Aero 2-piece Style (2 piece look) ------------------

1998 MERCEDES-BENZ E430
OBSIDIAN BLACK/BLACK
XENON H.I.D.
DEBADGED E430
AMG CHROMED TIP DUAL EXHAUST
CARLSSON 1/6 CHROME (PLUS 1) WHEELS
[This message has been edited by Kevin (edited 12-11-1999).] [This message has been edited by Kevin (edited 12-11-1999).] |

I think I'm gonna try the 17x8's(I know they're replicas but they're so damn hot!) so I'll let you know how it goes. Kevin Yeah I'm aware that they're replica wheels at NR Auto. Rather than the "2 piece look" of the Aero, I wanted an actual 2 piece rim. That's the one that only comes in 17x8. |

Major thanks my man...This was what I was looking for. HRE, Forgeline, & Fiske all have good websites. The prices are a little harsh but I'm willing to spend a few extra hundred to get exactly what I want, since I don't want to do any other performance modifications to the car. I'm leaning towards HRE classic 506's. By the way, HRE shows the standard upgrade for the W124, pre-94, as 17x8!!! Much like you said, it appears that there won't be a problem. Thanks again. |
