Is it possible to restud or replace the studs on studded tires?

Is it possible to restud or replace the studs on studded tires? Many of the studs on my tires are either missing, ready to come off or are worn. They've only been used for 3 or 4 seasons. The tires have lots of life left in them. I'd hate to have to buy a new set.

my understanding is no....becasue you can only do this on NEW tires that have never been driven....the holes need to be 100% free of crud and grit or the heads of the studs would use that grit to grind right through the tire....thats how it was explained to me about 25 years ago.

The bad thing is about half the studs are gone on the rears and maybe I've got 1/4 of the studs on the fronts.

good grief, I haven't even seen studded tires since my dad had a pair on the back of his 69 Olds Delta 88 in the EARLY 70's...they hummed to beat the band but helped get around the hills in Cincinnati.

I don't think it'd be too hard to clean the stud holes. I'd do that before taking them in.

I doubt it would be hard work, but it'd be very tedious work...
Sitting with a hand drill with a bit thats the same size as the studs for an hour a tire would suck... How much is your time worth to you, and do you have kids?

I would say its a $20 an hour job, because your eyes would bleed before it was done...

Where do you live where you need studded tires?

I live in WA and the the start of winter was brutal, lots of ice and snow on the roads especially in the early AM when I left for work. Right now I don't need studded tires but I bet the moment I switch back to regular rubber, I'll be up to my cajones in ice and snow. If I knew where I could get some new studs I could do it myself or if I could find someone who would do it it'd be way cheaper than a new set.
