1999 W210 spare tire
A buddy of mine just bought a 1999 W210 diesel. The car is in great condition, however, there is no spare tire. Will a W210 owner please tell me if the spare is mounted on a black steel wheel? Is it full size or donut? Is it mounted on a matching stock alloy wheel? I am trying to help him find a usable (inexpensive) spare. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The owner's manual for my car states emphatically to always use the same size spare as the other tires on the car. Otherwise the traction control system gets involved.
An alloy wheel fits in the trunk, if you find one of those instead of a steel wheel. The center cap must be removed, of course. |

My 1998 E300 had an alloy wheel for the spare. Other than the missing center cap, it was identical to the other four on the car. My 2001 210 wagon has a cheap black steel wheel. So whatever you can find will fit in the well OK. It's kinda cool to have an alloy spare.

Thanks to all for the quick responses. It will probably be cheaper to find a steel spare wheel, even though all the wrecks will have at least a 4 to 1 ratio of alloys.

The spare is another bottle cap alloy just like the other 4. You should be able to pick one up cheap locally or on ebay.
Find a smashed W210 pop the trunk and snag the spare, they are always like new!

If you've got an alloy wheel for your spare just like the others on the car, then someone has replaced the original spare. It came standard with a black steel wheel that is the same size as the other tires, but is a limited use tire. The spares on the E430 sport edition and the AMG edition were even more limited and come with more warnings.

So MB started cheaping out their with the W210's hugh? All of the old cars came with five identical wheels and tires. Up to the W140's for the S. I guess the W124 was the cut off on the E's.
Cheap Germans, not MB owner should have to put up with a lesser spare.

Saving some weight may be part of the reason too.

Good point. When I get a chance to look at a W221 I'll check out the spare. On a monster almost 5k pound S class I don't think they can say they want to take 10 pounds out of the trunk.
A lot of the newer MB's have different size wheels on the front and back as well.
