unusual wear, help needed

1989 300CE 185K

I've got Continental Touring 215/55R/16 tires. About 10K on them.
Front left tire shows BAD wear on ouside edge of tire. It's bad enough so you can hear it, I thought something was rubbing and when investigting discovered the ugly wear pattern.
This is my third set of tires on the car. Never any other problems. Handled fine, I just finished a 1000 mi trip. I haven't hit any curbs or bad holes. What can go bad to cause this? And so suddenly?
I'm thinking a faulty tire or something alignment related went bad.
Any advice on what to check first?
Thanks

it sounds like you have an alignment problem. this can be from wear of components. you dont have to run over anything to get a problem.
