Today I installed my new chrome Giovanna Rio rims (17x7.5) on my 1992 400e. The rims came with tires in the size of 215.45.17. The rims are kick butt (I'll post a pic tonight or tomorrow) but the tires look kinda wimpy. Luke at Tire Rack told me I HAVE to have this size tire or it will rub (oh by the way the car is lowered with H&R's). I'm not contesting Luke's professional opinion, but it just looks like I have plenty of clearance for larger tires. I would realy like the tires to be a little bit wider and taller. Should I try putting 225.45 on the car? Any suggestions?

Thanx.....Peter (I'm pulling my hair out on this one!)

when changing tires/rims, you always have to consider the overall diameter, and you want it as close to the stock one as possible. clearance and rubbing are not the only factors (speedo, alignment etc...)

With fenders rolled, you should be able to get away with 225s. But Luke is right, 100% sure that 215s will fit, 225s, start getting in trial and error.

The difference between 215 and 225 tires is about 1 centimeter (exact difference depends on the tires that are used). Personally I think that is a difference that can hardly be noticed (especially when you are driving past).
The 225/45 will be a little wider and a little higher...

greetingz,
