Goodyear Ultra Grip winter tires
Just put on my brand-new Goodyear Ultra Grip GW3 tires. They were rated best in class by both Consumer Reports and Car and Driver. Just noticed when looking at the sidewall they are made in Germany!
Will be interested to see how they do in the snow. I had been running Nokian WRs which were OK, but could still get me stuck in 4" of snow or more.

I have used those tires on a Cadillac Catera, and purchased as set for my
E300. I would describe them as ok tires. They didn't have as much forward bite as I thought they would, and for the Catera, I only had them on the back. The grip part might have been the size. They were 225/50-16, they like floated on top of the snow. And, it suffered a little waggle at high speeds. The good news is they wear like cast iron, and I was never stuck. I put over 20K highway miles on them in two seasons, and I'll be they were only 1/2 worn. For my E300, I bought 4 with the idea that I'll hopefully get rid of the waggle. My Catera tires were made in Germany, but the E300 size was made in Slovania. (the split up part of yugoslavia, I'm being lazy and not going out to the garage to look.) The E tires, I haved tried yet, but they look identical to the Germany made ones. |

Purchased a set of 4 last winter.
I find them to work really great. For a dedicated snow tire, it is the smoothest riding wintertire I've ever owned.

Thanks to you both for your experience!
I've only had them on for a few days, but have to say they certainly are quiet and smooth. I didn't realize how much I actually value quiet tires until I got my summer Nokian NRVs off - man, are those noisy!

I bought a set of these last winter (not the GW3). They are very quiet, grip is good, smooth riding and after 1 season show no wear at all.
Downside: Q rated, very slow steering repsonse on highway Feels like a different car, must have high slip angle

Yes, that's one nice thing about the GW3 - it's H-rated, and actually handles pretty well without the scary squirminess I've felt with some winter tires.

Have Dunlop Wintersport M2 on my 300E that are also made in Germany. Don't know if the new M3's are also from Germany. Been happy with the winter performance of my M2's.

I have now had the chance to use the Goodyear Ultra Grips after 2 snow storms, one which deposited some ice first. I am VERY happy with these tires. They are better winter tires than Michelin Arctic Alpins and Nokian WRs (to be fair, the Nokian WRs are all-year, "all weather" tires, not dedicated snow tires).
If tread life is reasonable, I think these will be my preference for the foreseeable future.

Now that we have had a lot more snow in Omaha, I wondered how you rate the Goodyear snows. The Nokians on our E420 will be due for replacement this fall and I too am looking for something with a little more agressive grip in snow than the Nokian WRs or Arctic Alpins. |

Hi Bob,
I have nothing but positive things to say about the Goodyears! We had a blizzard in Omaha last week - admittedly, I did not take the MB out in the midst of it, but it certainly did well in the aftermath. I have a spot near my house where you have to stop for a stop light on an uphill attitude. It tends to become highly polished ice after a few cars have spun on it. I have had no trouble getting going, even from a dead stop on ice - much better traction than others in front or behind me, with all-season tires and front-wheel drive vehicles. I would definitely buy these tires again. Good handling and quiet, too.

Don't buy Goodyear F1 (GD3) tires ! My brother who have a 2004 Cadillac in California have them and swear that they are only good in the wet weather. But they are noisy just like the Falkens equivalent and actually does not have the precision like the Pirelli 6000 for example in the dry weather.
You wanna one of the best tires around? Go for Pirelli Zeros ...if you don't have the money then just too bad...sob sob Last edited by hofoodsmy; 03-08-2007 at 12:24 AM. Reason: spelling |

I'm not sure what a comment about Goodyear F1 (GD3) tires has to do with this discussion about winter tires unless you are just out to bash Goodyear. |
