I have installed new Aero II with HTRZ2s on my 400E. The off-set is the same as the stock wheels and the rolling circumference is also the same to within a fraction (sizes below in signature). The car rides perfectly with the stock wheels and tires, but the car shakes horribly at any speed over 60MPH with the new set up. It feels like the tires are severely out of balance - but Tire Rack balanced them when I bought them and when they still shook I had the MB Dealership perform a high-speed on-car balance. It still is going to shake the whole car apart! Can the tires be out of round and not detected by the balancer? Where can I go for diagnostics/help?

Thanks,

Ray

I am working with TIRERACK on a solution. They have been very helpful and are anxious to fix the problem. I spoke with customer service and they sent me to another tire store for another balance - using a different machine capable of test "road force variance" which can spot out-of-round and out-of-line tires or wheels.

I'll post the results later.

I was wondering that maybe I am not centering the wheels on the hub of the car when i put them the wheels on. there are a bunch of threads associated with this problem. I think member Larry Bible or Donald Swinford went into huge detail on this subject, maybe try a search to see what they said.

As it turns out, the test TIRERACK suggested has determined that the tires are out of spec. I'm told by customer service that this is extremely rare - just lucky I guess. The limit for road-force-variance is 25# for passenger tires and 15# for performance tires. The TIRERACK customer service rep looked it up and then verified with someone in the shop. This is consistent with the sound I hear as I drive on them - even after the balance I had to remove them from the car to avoid damage to the suspension. Three of my tires were out of spec.

TIRERACK tells me that they are going to mount and test three tires and then dismount and send them to me. I'm waiting their instructions/confirmation now.

I'll fill you in after I get the promised return call. So far, customer service has been great. I hope the tire factory is as good to them as they are being to me.

Ray.
