Aftermarket steel wheels (W123)

Will stock 14" wheel covers clip to generic aftermarket steel wheels? I'm having a bear of a time finding stock steelies.

If so would you recommend using a wider wheel than stock (these will be on my 240D with a turbo 3.0L so I am working with a whole 120 HP )

What is the stock wheel size?

My goal is to use my beat bundts for winter tires and get a set of steel wheels and wheel covers with thin stripe whitewalls for the rest of the year.

Thanks.

there are two types of wheel covers. they look the same. one uses steel teeth to dig into the rim for attachment. the other uses rubber to make contact. the rubber one i think depends on a subtle lip on the rim to work. if your generic wheel has this you will be fine if the overall dimensions are the same. (i don't know if they will be)

i think the stock width on the 240 rims is 5.5 x 14. the 300 i believe is 6 x 14. and the sl and sec have 6.5 x 14. this is around the years 77 thru at least 84. the sec later went to 15" wheels.

i am not sure you will be able to feel much difference in the wheel width, since the tires will work on any of them, probably. the wider rim may give a little more secure feel, but it will be very very subtle, i think.

hope this helps

Thanks. Guess I will have to wait until my new wheel covers arrive to see what type they are.
