2002 S500 OEM rims for 1999 S500

Hi Luke,

I want to use OEM rims from 2002 S500(W220) to mount snow tires for a 1999 S500(W140) vehicle. All rims are 7.5 in width.

Original rims on the 1999 S500 has offset of 51. 2002 S500 rim has offset of 46. Is there any problem as a result of the difference in offset value?

1999 S500 has 235/60/16 HR tire, is there is problem to use 225/60/16 tire size for winter with W220 rims mounted on 1999 vehicle?

Please advise. Thanks.

Hi Rdanz,

Thanks for the reply. Did you have the 2002 rim mounted on 1999 S500?

Here is the information from the OFFSET calculator but just not sure how to interrupt the information. Thast why I want Luke to access the situation.

Offset calculator give the following

Current Wheel Specs Width inchesOffset mm New Wheel Specs Width inchesOffset mm

Inner Clearance:

(the inside of the wheel to the strut housing)

Outer Position: (position of the outside edge of the wheel

Tire Size calculator shows

I have a 94 Sclass with 2002 -17" wheels which have a 46 offset and they work fine only I had to get shorter lug bolts.

Bolt size for mounting

Hi Rdanz,

That's good news. What size of bolt do I need to mount the 2002 rims onto the W140 1999 S500. From your reply, the original 1999 bolt is not suitable for proper mounting. I noticed that you have 17" rims instead of 16" rims, maybe the bolt size needs to be shorter for my application.

Also what size of tire do you mount on the 2002 rirms? 1999 S500 used 235/60/16 size tire. I noticed most of the W220 use 225/60/16 tire size. Not sure if it is due to the extra weight on the W140. 235/60/16 is actually odd size when trying to source for winter tires.

Please advise. Thanks.

Fitting comfirmed

All right, just for a closure.

I finally mounted Hankook W300 Ice Bear 235/60R16 winter tires onto the 2002 7.5*16 rims. No need to use different set of lugs for mounting, the original ones that come with the 1999 model are fine. Even with the difference in offset size, no interference encounterd both front and back wheels.

For use as winter rim, the seven holes rim looks good too.
