Tires ok to use after sitting?
 

Friends -

Last summer I put some Nitto 460's on CLK rims on my 89 300TE. Some time later the transmission started flaking out (275K, not bad I guess) and the car has been sitting since.

I am going to move it to my new house to decide what to do with it, but I wanted your thoughts/experience on whether I could use the tires/rims on my 1992 300TE. The tires have been sitting for over 6 months.

I know, I should have dealt with this, but it just wasn't a priority ...

For that short a period of time, they should be fine, if it were longer, they may be proned to dry rot.

you may have flat spots which if you pump the tires up more than spec and drive it a week or so they should dissappear.

I am usually over in the Diesel Discussion forum......popped in here because my brother is interested in some new tires for his C230.....was just going to send him the link.....and I spotted this thread.....

I purchased a "new, to me" '85 300D this past summer....it was advertised as having "new tires".......I picked up the car, and was impressed with how new the tires looked....Goodyear Regatta 2....they still had all of the mold nubbs and coloring within the tread from the manufacturing process.....I drove the car home, 200 miles.....car ran well, but vibrated above 70mph....took the car to my indy tire guy to have them balanced.....they could not be easily balanced.....wound up with lots of weight.....took them to a Goodyear Tire store, to look into warranty......they looked at the tires, still with nubbs and color in tread.....and tried to balance them .....could not do it.....the store manager was intending to replace them, and when he looked at the tire codes.....found that they were manufactured in March of 2000, and out of warranty......so bottom line I got a deal on a pair of new ones for the front.....kept the rears on.....and have 2 tires in my storage shed/barn......have had no problems.....the rears finally smoothed out after running 1000 miles or so....

this car sat for 5 or 6 years (carfax agrees) on these tires.......and the 2 on my rear are still in great shape.....after 6000 more miles

Just wanted to tell you not to worry.......6 months or so is no big deal.....

I had a similar situation, but prior to me owning the car. The former owner told me the car sat for months and months because, as a MB, it needed a lot of repairs, but she didn't have that much to spend on it. I never put 2+2 together, until I was at the alignment place recently, and they said I needed new tires due to dryrot. I was like, what??? How could a tire dryrot? They're round and they move. But then I made the connection. Car sat, maybe in a puddle of water.
