Does this mean that you finally bought a 300E / E320?

Waited a minute. You didn't get that '92 500E did you from holeshot, the one that you offered to trade for a Porsche engine rebuild?

......I was very close to buying a 500E at a dealer in Arkansas (Auto Trader).......but I just couldn't justify it and ultimately there was too much risk that it was a "pile"........Someday I will have a 500E but not yet.

I DID finally find a cream-puff 300E (a guy e-mailed me after seeing the post).......It's not here yet......I'll post pics when it shows up.

I'm looking for steel wheels so I can complete the Euro look with hubcaps.

Sweeeet.

Can you give us any details? Year, mileage, color, etc. ?

300E's have to be nearly the perfect car. I wish I still had mine.

I'll resize the pics tomorrow and post a few......but until then......it's a 1987, medium grey with 101K on it. It's supposedly all original paint and looks like it doesn't even have a door ding on it. The guy I'm buying it from bought it from the original owner last year but decided he need a truck instead.

In the last year he spent almost $6K doing mostly preventative maintenance.....he seems pretty anal and that's a good guy to buy a car from. He even did Euro headlights with the height adjustment switch.

I have to admit I didn't think I would buy one this old....but the more I think about it and do research, I find that I think I made the right choice. It's my first Benz and I think it will do just fine until I can justify a low milage 500E....

I'll probably have it for many years.

I appreciate your interest Paul.....I'm pretty excited.

If a 300E is is nearly the perfect car, then what does that make the 400E??

W124 steel wheels are 124 400 10 02

Dealer list is $100 and this dealer sells them for $75

You'll need new lug bolts, too, of course.

The early 300E's are great. They only thing to watch out for is oil consumption. The early valve guides were hard, and were changed later in the production run. It would be hard for me to believe that the valve guides on this engine are original anyway.

Early 300E's are also the lightest of the W124's, so they are faster than the lower-body-cladded facelifted versions from 1990-1992.

3.0 liter M103 engines also use the simpler CIS-E fuel injection system, which is reliable and inexpensive, unlike the later HFM-SI M104 engines which have very expensive throttle actuators which are prone to failure.

300E's also don't have deteriorating engine wiring harnesses unlike the later '93-'95 300E / E320.

If you want to see a very clean, nearly perfect '87 300E, check out JCE's car:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/vbpicgallery.php?do=big&p=205

You will noticed that he did a complete "Sportline" installation on it, along with the wheels from his '97 C230.

You're right, it is a very clean car.

I see that it has Texas plates. Did it come from a ShopForum member from Texas?

It's probably a good idea to black out the license plate number.

I also notice that it has euro headlights (an excellent upgrade), along with clear corner turn signal lights with yellow bulbs. Original corner lights had a dark amber lens.

You're right about the plate.....sorry....I deleted the pic.

Yes I bought it from a forum member but I'm not sure what his screen name is?
