Exclamation Tire Rack vs. Discount Tire: Diff. Plus Sizes!!

Last year I bought a set of Replica Rims & Hankook Tires for my '87 300D Turbo W124 from Dicount Tire. My experience was great, the price was outstanding, and the tires & rims after 20K Miles are still superb.

So this year I'm looking at getting a set of Rims & Tires for my '92 400SE W140. Stock: 235/60R16. I want to go plus 1 size and found some Replica AMG's from Discount Tires:

http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/findWheelDetail.do?mk=&yr=1992&wd=17&pc=53738&rw=8&bp=5-112&vid=006291

The above rims are: 17X8 5-112 35AM. The optional tire size for this rim shown at Discount Tire is either: 245/50-17 OR 255/50-17.

Now when I visit Tire Rack and find some 17X8 rims that appeal to me, the ONLY optional size for tires I get is: 235/55-17.

I really want to go with the tire size (235/55-17) that Tire Rack gives for all their 17X8 rims, but put them on the 17X8 rims found at Discount Tire. Reason being is that there are more types of tires to choose from in that size (235/55-17) and therefore a more competative price between them.

Any comments on whether this size (235/55-17) will be a problem on the rims from Discount Tire? The above 3 tire sizes are all within 2% of stock, using the tire calculator. It appears as these optional tire sizes are the same for all 17X8 rims at both Tire Rack & Discount Tire.

Thanks.

I just purchased some 19" tires from Discount for my 4Matic Wagon, and ran into a similar problem with wheel choices, but they had the best price on Michelin Pilot Sports. The Lorinzer wheels I wanted I got from a wheel company on Ebay.

Anyway, at the very least you could purchase the tires separate from the wheels, but purchase BOTH from Discount? I am sure they won't mind as long as you don't request them to guarantee they will fit and not rub etc. Also, you might have better luck if you call on the phone and explain what you are wanting to do, and I would imagine a customer service rep could take care of that special order for you.

Yes, I want to buy BOTH tires & rims from Discount. And the size I want is 10MM narrower, so I don't see them being a problem with rubbing, but maybe with not offering any edge rim guard???

I'll call them today.

we actually recommend 3 plus 1 sizes

235/55-17
245/50-17
255/50-17

with 235/55-17 being the best option because of the overall diameter
