magnesium or aluminum wheels on the 83 240D??

Driving past a local boneyard, saw a familiar grille, did a quick U turn and into the yard. It was an 83 240D. Inside the car, there were 4 lightweight, and I mean lightweight wheels. I wanted them!!! "How much?" "15 a piece" "I'll take them".

NOw, I can pick up and carry all 4 wheels, and I am NOT a strong man and they look like magnesium or aluminum. Were these an option on the 83? They look exactly like the regular steel wheels.

i have found them only on 83 240s i think. before that they were steel wheels only.

they are the berries. the little 240 rides and handles like a dream on them.

I had them on my 83 240D. Aluminum wheels that look just like the steel ones, but way lighter. Good score.

My 240D came with those wheels. I never really realized it until a few years ago when I took a magnet to them.

Tom... Not sure, I'll go out and take a look at the door frame later, but I believe my 240D, parts car is an 82. Was it an "option" in the later cars, my 85 does not have them (but soon will)

Those aluminum wheels were standard on the 240D starting in 1980. There were quite a number of things that changed between 1979 and 1980, such as the seats, the texture of the dashboards, and the instruments going from english to metric. BTW, I have a set of those wheels in my back yard. They're slightly bent, but repairable.

2 Pair for sale

I have to admit, I like the look of the bundts so much more than hubcaps on my 240 that I've switched. I have a set of 4 aluminum rims if anyone wants to make an offer.

Would someone weigh one of those aluminum 240D rims for me, I'm very curious about little things like that.

Ah yes, I believe it was your post, quite a while back saying you could tell the difference when you put on the aluminum rims. Gotta admit I was a bit skeptical, but I did notice the difference. Did you bend yours up?

they are very light. i would guess ten pounds or less. but they are also very easy to bend.

you can tell the difference in ten pounds of weight easily in ride quality.

this is the reason i always council to not go oversize on the tires. they weigh too.

No, they were on the 240D that I bought from a guy in New York City. 20 years of living there did the job on those wheels. I replaced them with a set of steelies that I found in the boneyard, and immediately noticed a difference in acceleration and ride. Now the 240D is gone and I have the steel wheels on my euro 300D. Eventually I may have the alloys straightened and put on the 300D.
