Wheel Painting
Curious as to why you need to clear coat the polished lip of a wheel. I am refinishing wheels that were clear coated that are flaking and have yellowed. The finish underneath, after removing the clear coat and polishing out looks nice and bright. These are summer only wheels that can be polished regularly since it is only the wheel lip. I understand that clear is a protective coat, but if the wheels are cleaned and polished regularly will the brake dust pit the finish? Thanks
Bill

I never realized that alloy wheels had clear coat on them before I read it here. I guess it just makes them look better, longer. Are they painted just like painting the car's body, powder coated, or some other special means of paint application?

Without the clear coat, the bare polished metal becomes a maintenance chore, just like polished engine parts.

I guess it's no different than the practice of dipping brass hardware in laquer to make the shine last longer.
