240D wheel cover problem
Shortly after I bought my '82 240D 226K six years ago, I had a new set of tires installed. When I picked up the car, the tire guy said all four of my rims were bent but were still OK to use. PO must have been a heck of a driver. A few weeks ago when I went back for new set number two, the guy found a crack in a rim. My first reaction when he handed me the bad rim was it felt almost weightless compared to a standard steel rim. Anyway, I went to the salvage yard and they located a couple replacement rims. When they arrived, turns out they were steel instead of Al, but the stamped number on the rim was identical to the one on the Al rim. Good I thought. Everything went fine until I snapped the wheel covers in place. They went on, but they are loose enough that I can rotate/turn them quite easily. On a test drive one came off but I recovered it. The caps have four clips. The rims bolted into place fine, car drives fine, etc. Any advice on what is going on here? Any hope or do I have to hunt down a pair of Al rims and start over again?
Many thanks for any advice. Sven |
