I have a 126 with the stock saucer wheels. The finish is mostly gone and I would like to restore them, where should I start?

wheel restoration

See the wheel refinishing article under the Repair & Maintenance section of mbcoupes.com. Unlike the article, I would not recommend leaving the primer and pigment layers off, as these provide significantly more scratch protection than clear coat alone. Also, consider having a pro do it if you don't have the proper equipment available to unmount/mount the tires safely. Good luck and enjoy your beautiful W126 chassis!

I have the same wheels and they needed a facelift. I went to Napa and bought the car touch up paint in spray. I picked a highly metallic silver for chrysler and a clear coat for wheels. I used a brillo pad and such to clean them really good and the I taped off the tires and went to town. Put many thin coats on and then many thin coats of clear. They looked absolutely new. If not better. I then bougt chrome center caps off E-Bay for $23 and that really makes them stand out. Prepare to spend about an hour per rim.

How did they turn out?

I recently picked up a 300E. This thing is mint. Purchased from a college prof. (Lady). You can tell she babied this car. I don't think anyone has sat on the rear seats. The only problem is the finish on the wheels are badly faded. I can't make up my mind. I may spring for some nice chromes, restore to orig, or have them dipped (Chrome). Any suggestions???

A friend told me that I can trade in my rims for a set of identical rims that are chromed. Does anyone know of an exchange program.

I would not do the swapo because you can't trade up in size. If you are going to buy, buy 16's IMHO. I have 16's on my 560 and they came out great with the procedure I did above and it only cost $12 + caps. If you really wnt to spruce it up get the chrome and blue crest caps from an after market co or E-bay. They are about $15 per and look lmarvelous. The new SLK's have them, 1 size fits all.
