Set my W210 up!

My '98 E300TD came with some 18" CLS style wheels that aren't really to my taste. I figure I'll pull them off and eBay them.

So I need some wheels and tires. I prefer 16" or 17" to improve ride comfort -- it's not like this is a sports sedan in the first place, and I'll save some money on tires as well. I tend toward preferring simple or classic in style -- the CLS wheels might be alright if they were not so big.

What do you guys recommend? I want to get something on order pretty quickly for a road trip starting in about a month.

Cheers, John

Have you shopped around for wheels?

Craigslist always has a set for sale, probibally a set for sale in your area.

Are you looking to go with stock wheels? AMG wheels?

trying to pick rims for someone over the Internet is somewhat futile. it's an
exercise similar to selection underwear, or ties, or music for someone. only
you know what you like and it's not always something easily defined. since
you haven't the only suggestion might be to go to Tirerack and begin to
narrow things down.

many questions to help you decide, eg.
- do you want a dress appearance or sport?
- what color or finish?
- forged or cast?
- bold or handsome statement?
- and it goes on and on....

You may even want to consider sticking with AMG designs to preserve the
MB appearance. Whether you choose replica or OEM might depend on your
pocketbook or desire for authenticity.

Go to your local library and flip through issues of Automobile or European Car
for more ads....or even the Web, for more design ideas. Try to stick with
OEM recommended offsets, no spacers.

Operative to me for this car is "cheap but not ugly." I've looked at Tire Rack (Luke never replied to my e-mail) and Discount Tire Direct, and they have a jillion wheels they claim will fit. They don't seem to list backspace, though, and I want to be sure before I order four of them with rubber! I think factory backspace for my car was 35 or 36, on a 16" wheel. The stock wheel was boring, but hey, it got the job done.

Somewhere I have some pics of the wheels on my car. It's an 18" CLS 5-spoke, and they'll definitely be up for sale once I've got a new set. Would be glad for someone for the forum to get them. They even have the custom stud set to fit the newer-style wheels to the older style hubs.

Thanks --
Cheers, John

I don't really care. I want cheap, and I want a smaller wheel diameter so I don't have to buy silly overpriced tires for a car that can't really take advantage of them anyway!

Cheers, John

I saw a set of the stock 16 inch W210 wheels on craigslist about 3 weeks ago for like 150 bucks, with newer tires on it.

But as far as aftermarket wheels, there are some that look good and cheap.

I think the stock wheels were 16" by 7" with an offset of 35, right?

I found a set I can live with, but they have a 38 offset. I've got to call around and make sure they aren't going to rub -- that I can't live with. Anyone know how much wiggle room there is in the wheelwells and suspension travel area?

Cheers, John

Incidentally, I also took the Craigslist advice and poked around. No original wheels for my car out there right now.

But would these fit, perhaps? Easy to clean!

These are what you need. AMG Aero II's, standard on the W210 E55 AMG. Clean, powerful, and OEM.

I've been searching around for a decent set of them myself. Hey, if you ever plan to chip your E300, you're going to need better wheels than the stock 16-inchers!

Luke -- I see you're around here today. What's it take to get your opinion on an easy sale?!

Cheers, John
