Commute to work so only have 30,000 miles on my 99 E-300TD

Seems like an unnecessary expense. If you don't have any vibrations or issues with the tires, why fix what isn't broken?

Better traction and better safety. Old tires are likely to have a belt separation and lose air leading to failures.

I would change them. I did some research on tire ageing a while back. Needed to determine whether to replace the never-used but 13 year old spare in one of my cars. There's not complete agreement between tire manufacturers and auto makers, but concensus was about six years makes sense. The main risk is the steel belts which hold the tire together rust and weaken. Rubber hardens, reducing traction and increasing noise and ride harshness.
At 30K you've gotten the majority of the miles out them anyways. - JimY |
