I HAVE RECENTLY BOUGHT A C36 AND I ALSO LIVE IN MONTANA WHERE IT CAN SNOW FROM 3 INCHES TO 3 FEET ON A REGULAR BASIS, THIS WEATHER TENDS TO LAST ABOUT 4-5 MONTHS, SO I'D LIKE TO GET SOME GOOD SNOW TIRES AND STEEL WHEELS FOR THE SNOW SEASON. WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT SIZE OF STEEL WHEEL IS A SUITABLE REPLACEMENT FOR THE 17" AMG'S, I'M THINKING A 16" WOULD WORK BUT DON'T KNOW FOR SURE, ALSO HOW WIDE, AND WHAT TIRE WOULD BE BEST?

Have a 1995 C36 and to my knowledge you cannot get 16inch steel rims on these cars. You cant get 16 inch anything on these cars due to our 600SL front rotor and calipers.
I bit the bullet and purchased AMG rims, i actually bought replicas first but they did'nt fit (the technician said the caliper was rubbing) so check your offsets if you're buying the fauxs!

Thanks for the info, I'd like to find steel wheels, and am not sure if the 16" factory ones from the W210 you refer to are steel or aluminum/alloy??? Also wondering if the TireRack or some one similar would have steel wheels that would fit?? Thanks again for the information and any more is appreciated...

If you're in Canada, look for the Euro 1993+ 400E 16x7 ET 46 8-hole wheel. It has a 70mm backpad, and clears my 500E calipers & rotors. I believe the calipers of the 600SL is the same width.

Also, I have one 7-spoke MB wheel (1997+ E430) 16x7.5 (don't know offset) but it too clears my 500E calipers & rotors.

I got this one used for $75, so hopefully you can get a set of four for under $300. I'll post part number later.

A correction on the 1997+ E420 wheel:

It is a 1997+ E320 and E420 10-hole wheel (looks like the top of an umbrella), and the size is 7.5x16 ET 41, again with a 70mm backpad, and in used condition $50-75 dollars each.

Yes, the USA 400E/E420 1992-1995 only came with 15-inch 8-hole wheels.

The European version got the bigger calipers and hence the bigger 16-inch x 7-inch wheels.

JS: did you see/test the E55 wagon or the new C32 AMG wagon?
What do you think?

Wow, 320HP from the stock AMG 3.6L/M104 engine?

I would definitely like to know how this was done. Do you know if Eddy Li of Performance Products in Vancouver, B.C., was responsible?

I know that Carlos Piad (sp?) in Virginia, stuffed a AMG 3.6/M104 engine into a 190-series chassis but went with an Electromotive engine management system. It was dynoed at 350HP.

Can you put me in contact with this person?

Thanks,
:-) neil

I just checked older Brabus literature and the RennTech website, and I still can't believe the figures of 320HP from an AMG built M104 engine (which I thought my C36 engine is).

Brabus: 288HP @ 6500RPM / 280ft-lb @ 5200RPM
RennTech: 281HP @ 6000RPM / 276ft-lb @ 5000RPM

I wonder what the finaly drive is (I choose between 3.27; 3.07; and 2.87).

At least Carlos' C36 was rebuilt with a different electronic system.

Thanks,
:-) neil

Appreciate it. I talked to Eddy today, and the best he can muster from the M104 engine is about 310HP, normally aspirated.

I did read of one guy who got 500HP at the rear wheels, with dual turbos on a C36, and he only paid $50K, including a reinforced RennTech tranny.

Thanks again for taking the effort.
