Wink Giant Skateboard

I have never liked the way the w123 300d sedan looks on stock tires/wheels..Like I say

A skateboard on old steel wheels...I wish I could get a lower profile...We'll see, Houston GTG is soon, maybe I'll see something I like on someones elses benzo..

Yes - sometimes . . .

I had previously always shopped around and always ended up at Tire Rack. I recently got a flat on my 96 Grand Caravan and knew I needed that I would have to replace two tires because Goodyear no longer makes the AquaTred 3. I decided to trust my numerous prior experiences with Tire Rack and I just went straight to them and order two Michelin HydroEdge.

Next day I went to Costco (for other things) and happened to notice the same tire for less - with no shipping charge, including mounting, balancing, valve stem, installation, life-time this and life-time that. Man did I feel burned! It was too late to cancel my order with Tire Rack, so I just had to eat it. I ended up having to pay an additional pile of money for mounting and balancing, etc . . . on loose rims. If I would have shopped around and seen the Costco deal I would have saved over $75 total and the personnal energy of having to change the tires myself.

I may still end up at Tire Rack in the future, but I will never forego shopping around (Burn me once, shame on me . . .).

i haven't purchased / installed 1 set of tires @ Costco since they stopped mounting tires from other vendors.

totally not worth it as they carry nothing but Michelins/BFGs now. for example, my last set of 195/50/15s (Azenis 912s a/s, 380utq rating, etc.) were had for $200 mounted / balanced / installed. the cheapest they had was $352. no thanks.

btw, my local tire guy has also beaten down all prices from kumho / sumitomo / toyos from tire rack and discount tire direct. that shop is just god sent... so cool they make me wanna get new tires every year.

The trick for me was to take the wheels in loose and then ask to sign a waiver
that would allow them to install a non-vehicle specific tire.

After some research I found a 1999 Plymouth Minivan model Voyager Base
on the Costco website that used the 205/75/14.
Interesting concept. In my experience, Costco selection is limited.

Costco is the only store that has ever given me a credit toward the next set of tires because they wore faster than rated. That is one reason why I return to buy tires from Costco. On my most recent visit with a non MB, I received more than 70% of the original price of 2 worn out Goodrich Premier tires which was applied to 2 new Michelin X radials. The Goodrich tires wore out in 23% of the rated wear out mileage. Every other store always claimed bad alignment, bad inflation or racing(!) and refused. In my favor, I did get tires rotated every 5000 miles at Costco and have the receipts to prove it. Wear is even and not feathered or scalloped. I ran the tires 2psi above recommended on the car's door sticker. Gives a margin for not checking psi every week.

Do not be surprised if you can not get any allowance under the tread wear warranty when taking in rims off the car.

For my MB, Costco's online tire selector can not find tires for my 300sd. In that case, I might be able to ask for a bigger size if the store has no size information. I will probably stay with stock 205 70 14.

I know that Costco enforces the OEM speed and load limits but was unaware that they would only install the OEM sizes. I assume there's probably a lot more selection available on their web-site than the local stores? One nice thing is they use nitrogen instead of regular air.

i tried the web site, it does not allow tire search by size, only by car. you have to fake it with another car to get prices on different size tires, kind of a pain.

FWIW, the traffic on my access road has increased a ton and with it traffic speeds. The police set up radar units along the road once a month. my speedometer was wrong by a few miles per hour with stock tires, when I went to 205/55/r16 it is spot on.

Costco's database is screwed

Just went and checked and their database does not recognize the "Sportline" variant so all they would like is the std 300E rubber.

TR, DTD and others actually recognise the variants and sell accordingly.

Not to mention the Costco price was BS! My local shop beats that any day (Pooor Freddies in Jamaica NY)

That is a huge plus on buying from Costco. I bought some X Radial Michelins (S rated) from Costco and my 300D killed them due to my driving style and the car's weight and the tires' very soft sidewalls. I also needed suspension work, so I wore those tires out in 15K miles (they were supposed to be 80K mile tires! ). The inside edges wore out, but after I replaced control arms and tie rods and did an alignment the wear was even. Costco credited me with no fuss, quite a bit on some H-rated Michelins which were much better.

I think the speedo being off would be enough reason for me to not do it. I want my miles counted accurately!

MB brakes are already way more powerful than they "need" to be, they can effortlessly lock up the puny tires that are stock on the W123/W126....so a slightly larger tire won't hurt anything in that regard. I do agree on the heavier tire putting more stress/wear on the suspension system etc....another reason I won't do it.

I have a set of 4 Michelin Destiny (same as Harmony, but re-named for Discount Tire Inc) on my car. They've been great so far...and wear like iron...I've had them for probably close to 20k with no noticable tread wear... My dad's SD has them too and he's put nearly 40k on them and still has just over half the tread left! (and he does not drive gently)

I would agree that they are cheaper.
Last summer July 07,I was driving from Vancouver Canada to Missouri.I stopped at the local Costco in Billings Montana, had 4 new BF Goodrich installed for 216.00$ tax included.
I would have never gotten that price up in Vancouver.
So far I'm very happy with my purchase...

Called the local Costco tire guy. He said -- hey, if you buy it online (meaning=if you can get the website to send you the size you want) -- we'll mount whatever size it sends us.

Ok, great.

I have a 1994 C280 -- OEM of 195/65/15. I've been running 205/60 for 3 full sets. Aha, a 98 C280 has 206/60 as OEM.

Problem: BFG T/A is available at 195/65 but not at 205. They have ONLY the summer performance BFG at 205 and then nothing but Michelins.

I'm going to go there tomorrow to see if he can order the T/A as I know they have them in 205/60 as I had a set and they are now available at other stores.

Why doesn't Costco carry that size?

could not find H rated tire at Costco size 205 70 14

Tried to buy tires at Costco for my 85 300SD. Costco employee looked at the label on the door. It says 205 70HR 14. I was told that Costco carries no tires of that specification and none can be ordered. As some others have said, Costco will install only what they think is a tire of same size and rating as original. Unless you can fool Costco workers.

I had fooled them into installing one size larger tires on a non MB car. They just looked at what was already on the car.

So lets say im running after market rims, lets say 18X8.5.

My door says 205/70/14, but I currently have 225/40/18's on the car, then what?

are they gonna try to get a 14" tire on a 18" rim?

I can see staying with the speed rating (thats just liability) but a larger size by customer request shouldn't be a problem. (ie a 205/70/14 over a 195/70/14 (in the case of a W123). . .
