Luke: Problem with Goodyear Eagle F1
Hi Luke
I bought a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 tires for my 1991 300SL. The build week is 37 of 2004, or about 3 years old. I bought these from TireRack, along with about the last 3 or 4 sets of tires I've purchased. I only drive this car in the summer. Most of the miles on these tires is highway. All 4 tires are cracking in the grooves of the treads. I believe they are unsafe to drive on. Tread depth is 5/32. 1) What causes this cracking? These are high performance tires and I would not / did not expect this sort of failure. 2) Is there any Goodyear guarantee on these tires?

Hi Fred, I am not sure if Luke has addressed your concern but maybe I can help.
Which Goodyear Eagle F-1's did you purchase?? The cracking you are describing in tread could most point to natural weathering of the rubber itself. The F-1 is a performance tire with a soft compund and more likely to wear more quicker than a regular passenger tire. Factor could include temperature of where you live, how much you drive and how much air you have in the tired. I would take it to an authrozed Goodyear Dealer and have the tires checked out

I had the same isse with other brands of tires too. It is not a structual cracks. They are cosmetic only, and are caused with flex in tires, and mostly cause buy underinflation or lack of use on the tires. That was how it was explained to me. BTW, I put plenty of hard miles on them and auto-x's too, and never had any trouble.

They are F1 GS.
They are only 2 years old. I keep them inflated correctly, and drive lots of highway miles, and only in the summer.

Well you say that you only drive the car in the summer well that leaves alot
off time for the tire to dry out due to little driving. A solution to this problem will be when you store the car put tire dressing on the tread of the tire. this will actually make the tire softer but make them last the time in storage. tire dressings actually make the tire softer thats why they are not good forr a high performance tire for the side walls. I used to have a friend you was like a master mechanic for mercedes. I believe that he helped make some of the shop manuals for mercedes. you could tell this guy any thing and he could tell you exactly what the problem was and tell you how to remove it even down to the littlest of things. he told me that mercedes advises people not to use tire dressings because they will soften the walls of the tire. If this be the case then put it on the tread and the tire will last longer for storage only. hope this can help for future storages. |
