W123 Replacement Rims/Tires

I've got an '83 240D, with the original 14" wheels.

I can't find a single place around town to replace my totally-bare tires.

There's a guy selling 15" Mercedes rims from an 01 CLK 500, would these work on the 123?

"5*100 wheel hub" do I have that?

You can always order tires online from a place like tire-rack. Where are you that you can't get tires in a store or ordered? Even walmart does tires, and they are everywhere!

yeah i was gonna suggest walmart tires http://www.walmart.com/catalog/catalog.gsp?cat=91083

at least get an idea of prices ..they have a road hazzard warranty that is pretty sweet .. blow out, knifed, nail, etc .. replace for free .. if you have 50% tread gone i think they rate new tire price off of tread life ... so you'd pay 50% for a new tire if it was worn pretty bad

Not likely. The mounting offset is different.

jkoebel,

Are U telling us a tire dealer won't sell U new or used tires? What is their reason?

I never heard of anything like that. Most sellers are glad for as much business as they can get. That's why they spend so much on advertising.

Those will probably work with spacers and longer bolts. I would get the right size tires myself.

wal mart has the tires you need... they need to be H rated... "H" rated because of the massive weight of the car.

I've got a set of bundts with pretty good tires on them.. I can remove the rubber from the wheels and sell you those if you don't want the wheels...

its a mis matched set... 2 are fairly new while the others have been on it since I bought the car...

The Don,

H and the other letters are a speed rating, not weight.

A 300SD isn't that heavy, ~4000 pounds.

Dakota,

U get your tires and NTB (????) where?

205 by what?

205 x 70 are a good replacement. I changed to that and the speedo and odo are right on the mark.

I think they are 205/75..I should probably make certain as I am in the market..NTB= National Tire and Battery. They are all over the place here in Houston. They always nail my alignment as well..

I am not that mech inclined even tires confuse me..I am "felon" Counselor..LOL

I believe the CLK's have different width tires on the front and rear, also.

I'm noticing that most of the "box stores" that do auto work will not put any tire on a rim/car that's not part of the "list" of manufacturer specified wheels/rims/tires.

The "box store" lawyers don't want a customer (or relative of a victim) coming back and claiming the store sold them the wrong tire, or SHOULD HAVE KNOWN that the "customers' stupidity" would have serious handling issues...

If the tire(s) you're looking for aren't part of the recommended list by Mercedes Benz, the store(s) you're trying to buy them from are only following their own Companys' Policy...

Best thing?

Buy the right set of rims for your W123 (proper offset and width for the tire of your choice), look up a model of car that the 14"/15" rim/tire combo would be legit on, then take the rims down and buy the tires of your choice...you may not be able to get the full "road-hazard warranty" but, if you're driving a Benz, who needs to save a few bucks when you damage a tire? Eh?

One final thought...

Look over your auto insurance policy...CAREFULLY...
See if your company has any language about "after market" parts and trim...some policies exclude payments for those damaged items, and I could see that if an accident was attributed to "non-spec'd" rims/tires, the insurance company could leave you hanging ... they'd pay the claim for the other folks, but you'd be on the hook for anything else, or worse yet, leave yourself open to a civil lawsuit/claim/judgement...

Just a thought...

Good luck trying to find what will make you happy...

BTW, I'm running 195/75R-14 on mine...I'm looking for a 205/65SR-14WW (or BW will work)...know any place?

That's a good point. MG. Insirance companies are, after all, in the business of making as much money as possible, NOT paying claims they can find a way out of paying.

dakota,

205 is the relative width of the tire.

75 is the height to width ratio. A 75 series tire that is 10 inches wide would be 7.5 inches high. That is looking at an inflated oval cross section .

R equals radial.

If there is a letter other than R, such as H, it is the maximum speed rating of the tire.
