Square Tires........

When I got my 380SE it had brand new, (as in molding flash between the treads), but the car had set for 3 years. The PO put the new tires on and drove it home and parked it(2 Miles). Hence, I had the tires dismounted and tried to balance them, but you could see the flat spots on them. It helped a little and I thought that miles on them would even them out.
Not so.
I put 3,000 miles on them to no avail. Yesterday I noticed that one was beginning to separate, so I had new tires put on. As I have some other things to do to the car yet. I put 40,000 mile tires on. ( bought 4, 40,000 mile tires in lieu of 2, 80,000 mile great tires).

Well My vibrations went away as they should and I am happy that the car isn't beating itself to death now. Still have a bit of vibration at 140mph....I am kidding.

A funny aside. When the tire guy was rolling(do square tires roll?) the old casings out to their tire pile I noticed that the casing would roll and stop on the flat, or bounce over the flat spot's. It was funny to watch, but not funny at all that they had been on the car for 3,000 miles.

So if you have to park the car for a while take the weight off the tires, or if you are looking at one that has set for any time at all, be prepared to buy new tires soon.

Our 300D sat in the garage for nearly 5 months after we bought it on the tires....moved it maybe twice in that time period....and they are still on it now as a daily driver....no flat spots or issues. 2 years is a different story though.

I've never been able to get flat spots out of the tires by driving them again. Flat spots mean new tires. And, yes, when storing for a year you get two tricks: (1) put the car on stands to take the weight off, or (2) pump up the tires to the max recommended on the tire (that's an old car collector's trick).

I never heard of this. Of course, I've never had a car that I didn't drive regularly either.
