1987 300TD Offset vs. 2003 E-Class Wheel Offset

I am looking for replacement wheels for my 1987 300TD; I found a few however I need some help from you guys on knowing if it will fit my car.

These wheels are 245/45/R17's, my stock wheels are 195/55/15's if I am not mistaken.

Can I get 17x8 Convex Flared 5 Spoke rims with 245/45/R17 Tires to fit?
- w/ spacers and new lug nuts, what do I need?

Found a wheel guide, thought I would share =)

Wish it had pictures.

Another link for reference

Judging by Wheel Collisions site the rims I am referring to above are the below specifications:

03-05 - E320/E500 -P/N: H 65296 - Description: 17x8 Convex Flared 5 Spk 2114011902

These are the wheels I have now (from their spec sheet):

86-88 - 260E/300E/D/TD/TE/CE - P/N:H 65135 - Description: 15x6.5 Flat 15 Slot 1244001802

So to better ask my question Will 17x8 Convex Flared 5 Spoke rims with 245/45/R17 Tires fit on my W124 Wagon? If so what do you need? Spacers? Lugs?

The new wheels have a 38MM offset.

I think the stock wheels were like a 40 somthing mm offset, so it should work.

The diameter of the lug seat may be bigger, but I am not sure on that one.

I was reading through the Wheel and Tires forum here the other day and found a web site that had a charge of tire/wheels that fit and who certified it; AMG certifies that 245/45/17's fit a W124 however there were comments which I can not remember, AND they were the last on the list which makes me worry a little about fit/rubbing.

I also went to a local aftermarket wheel shop who said for 17's his computer told him that 215/45/17's were the highest suggested tire/rim combo to use.

So I decided to look around a bit more and found these.

they are off a 2003ish C-Class and are equipted with 205 55/R16 tires. I am going to say that I am betting a better fit with these instead and plan to call him within the hour to see if they are still available.

I have 215/45-17s on my 300TE, no problems or issues.

The thing that worries me is the old lug style has a smaller diameter lug, which may or may not work with the new wheel.

Thumbs up

iwrock, see thats what I need to know, I have no problem getting new lugs but I do not know what diameter lug to purchase.
  • Should I get lugs that are made for the wheels I am purchasing (2003 C-Class)?
  • Or are those a different thread/size?

I appreciate your time iwrock!

LOL Not to sound like a retard here but I just got a call back from the guy w/ the 5-star E-Class wheels. I am picking them up 2morrow so scratch the 16's I am getting the 17's.

Even if they don't fit it's a really good price considering their condition.

So now I will need to figure out what lugs to get to appropriately fit the 245/45/R17's to my wagon.

If I have to get new tires so they don't rub on bumps or whatever then so be it.

I think they'll fit, and I like the look, but a much larger heavier wheel puts stress on the related steering and suspension parts, you may discover you need new shocks or steering damper.

Pay particular attention to the scrub on the tread, if you have excessive camber, the wider tire will accentuate tire wear.

very important to get the correct length and ball or cone seat lugs. You might consider a locking lug... folks around here will steal the wiring and plumbing out of newly constructed houses

heres my ol' 84 on 245/35 17 CLK rims

@ Mister Byrnzoil - Wow those look really great, plenty of room to spare it would appear; yeah I figured I might have to at least get new lugs, I am not very informative on what it is I should be getting for these wheels so I guess I will have to ask around at some local wheel shops for an answer.

I pick up the wheels tonight after work so wish me luck!

Those are exactly the wheels (albeit replica versions) I would like for my car ('87 300e). I too am a little concerned about the 8" wide size and the offset -- the offset on the replicas are 35mm. I'm not too worried about the 17" size, though. I would say that you might have to get some smaller tires for them, though. Maybe 215/45's?

Needless to say, please post pictures! . . . and descriptions.

Cheers,
Lui

P.S. There is a picture of some on a W124 500e on a fellow named Rik Johnson's website: http://www.2phast.com/500e/default.htm

Here is an image link:

I am actually selling the first set of wheels in the original post if anyone is interested, I bought them, then bought the second set and the second set fit the car so perfectly that I can not complain. I would say it has one brand new 245/45/R17 Michelin tire and 3 that need to be replaced (IMHO).

$500 takes them! Message/E-Mail me with questions, local pickup unless you really want to pay shipping.

I will take better pictures as soon as I get a chance.
