123 Wheel Upgrade Question

1) Has any body used a 1998 CLK 320 alum rim on an '85 W123 300D Turbo?
2) Are these rims usable on a W123? is it drop-in without any mods and spacers? Is it going to clear the tie-rod-end on the fronts?

Heres the link to give you a picture of what kind of wheel i am talking about:

http://newwheel.com/index.php?page=wheelbrowse&pid=1962&step=3

I saw one of these rims from a '98 CLK, but I don't know why I find it attractive especially on a W123 sedan..... what do you guys think???

I am also interested in the answer to this question. does anyone know the stock offset of the 14" rims, and can you, 85chedeng300D, find the offset for those rims you suggested. also what kind of tires were you planning on running? the reason I am interested is because i have a dead crown vic with brand new 245/50 R16's on it on 16x7 rims, if those tires would fit on the w123 then I could be a very happy camper and so could you.

Main points: stock offset
New rim offset
height and width difference between new and old rims/ tires combo

The offset required is less than 25mm.

I'm quite sure the CLK wheels are significantly greater than this value and they won't fit.

digging through the FSM I found that there were stock option rims in an offset as high as +30mm on rims as wide as 6". with that in mind any +30mm offset rim should fit and clear properly if it was around 6".
if it was a wider rim would a spacer to lower the + offset work to give the proper internal clearance or should a larger rim with a lower offset be used to begin with? i.e 16x7.5 +15mm offset as opposed to 14x6 +30mm offset

also I found a site that lists all of the rims sizes and alot of the 16x7.5 rims are offered in many offsets mainly +15mm and +35mm for many of their rims, some offsets are not listed but they do say high and low offset.

I've seen those wheels on a W123.

You need matching lug bolts. In my case (W124), I used lug bolts from a W114/5 with steel wheels.

I don't know pal! I didn't realize until now that there are a lot of parameters to consider (i.e. offset...etc...) I thought as long as the lug bolt pattern is identical, we're good to go. But this what this forum is for. so, to answer your question, I'm sorry, I don't know....wish I can help you too...

I have them on my wagon...

They fit but just barely. There's maybe a red C.Hair between the rim and the tie rod end. (Red ones are just a little thicker) I'm not using any spacers and they work fine.

ps I paid $300 for the rims, tires, lug bolts and caps off Craigslist.

Stock bundt offset is 25mm
The CLK offset is 37mm

I'd probably want some 10mm spacers in there and longer bolts, myself. I would fear the wheel would bend a bit under cornering and rub on the suspension.

An RC hair seems not enough to me.

I may be a little late with this but for my 84 300D turbo bolt pattern 5x112 offset 32-45 mm with no mods to be made for nice fit!!!

They fit

I'm running them on my 85 TD right now. The tie rod is VERY close to the wheel.
So close you cannot run clip on weights on the inner rim. I put these on a few
weeks back and have had no problem. The look really good. Visually they
look like they could have been a stock option. I couldn't be more pleased.

How did you guys resolve the center cap issue? The front bearing cap hits the center cap of the wheels.

Can you guys also post what lug bolts to get? TIA!

front center caps

The center caps that came with the CLK wheels would not work for
me. I "dented" in the caps as much as I dared with a ball peen hammer.
Then I used the caps from my bundts. It has worked so far, even though
the front bundt caps almost don't seat. Maybe a .030 gap. But they have
in fact stayed in place just fine so far. These are the wheels I thought looked the most "OEM", imho.

digging up an old post here, but I am using 5mm spacers on my 300CD roadster (and did the same on my 85 280CE) and only had to massage the grease cap a little to get the clearance and for my center caps to fully seat. Easy breezy, and man they look so good...for now...

I use 5mm up front with stock bundt lugs. In the back I think i'm using 20mm bolts and have an extra 10 from my order as I had to order 20. They're RAD bolts and are TuV certified if you're interested in them.
