Painting Rims?

I have a 1991 300E With original rims on it. I want to keep the original style but get a more sleek look. Anyone know how well Black paint would do on these rims? With proper prep of course. Thanks.

Dont bother, because as soon as you get your tires re-balanced, or new tires, they get scratched (alot)

Powder coat them or you'll regret it, comming from a former tire installer...

Powder coating is kindof a super paint method. An electrical chage is applied to the object which attracts the paint and then it is baked afterwards. Its considered next thing to chrome plating.

Actually I may be wrong about the methodoligy.

Powder coating is baked on after it is applied electrostaticaly. Think like glaze is to ceramics.

Take a look at most outdoor furniture.

I powdercoated my AMG Pentas instead of painting. Although wheels can typically take the full temp powder (400 F), I would recommend a low temp coating if available.

Powder coating is a powdered silica that is put onto the metal. they then bake the object with the powdered silica on it and it turns to a glass sortof. wont ship crack anything.

Powder coating uses a polymer, it doesnt use silica unless as a filler.

prepping the surface is most important.

The last wheel shop I worked in has a 6-step process before it got the coating. They'd use a chemical to take off the old coating (paint, powder) (I forget the chemical, but it smelled like dead fish...)

after that, it gets a rinse with tap water.

the into various stages of filtered water, and etching chemical. a bath with a special ph neutral soap and then another rinse with filtered water.

THEN the primer powder go's on, then the color (most wheels are "hyper silver...)

Would a black powder coat stand up to the tire balancing/changing?

powder coating is a resilient coating, it should stand up to the abuse of once in a while tire work.
