Well, the first place on your recommended list for my zip code (22039) was Mr Tire #595/Craven Tire & Auto refused to honor those prices, he was pretty rude when I mentioned that I had gotten the prices from this website, too.

from the information I found when you mentioned the website you mentioned "MercedesShop.com" .... not "Tirerack.com". They have no connection with MercedesShop. The pricing on my website only applies to Tire Rack refferals and are not offered to anybody else ..... please send me an email with your name address and phone number ... Luke@tirerack.com

I told the fellow at Mr Tire that I had gotten the price from a list on the Tire Rack website.

I sent you my information. Thanks, Luke.

OK, the folks at the corporate level of Mr. Tire, who set up The Tire Rack recommended installer pricing, and worked with my guys here on their program implementation and the listing on our website.

The Mr. Tire pricing that is available to Tire Rack customers reflects a significant discount from there normal pricing and is based on several cost reducing factors like ease of handling product, reduced need for customer education, the relationship between our 2 companies, and many other factors.

With that said they are not obligated to the pricing listed on www.tirerack.com for installation of product not purchased from The Tire Rack. So, you were quoted their normal installation rate for product not purchased from one of their stores or one of their corporate partners.

As I understand it, from both sides of the story, you have some used tires that were given to you which you need installed and Mr. Tire wants to charge their standard installation rates.

While the verbiage I put here is in no way an official statement it is an accurate reflection of both positions

Okay. Thanks for your efforts and for looking onto it, Luke. When I need some new tires, I'll get them from you.

The place I went to in the past is no longer a bargain, and they have a continuing problem reading/interpreting the words "INSIDE" and "OUTSIDE" printed on the tire (this reading problem is probably not unique to the tire installers here) - so I'm seriously considering buying a tire mounting setup and a balancer. A manual setup is slow and a PITA - but at least I would know that it was done right.

It's a shame when you increasingly feel like you have to do things yourself to insure that they're done correctly. I feel that way MOST of the time nowadays.

While I was at the Costco near where I live yesterday, I asked the tire guy what he'd charge to mount and balance my tires. $11.00 apiece. I'm taking them in there in the morning. Woohoo!

Random thought:

It might be nice if they brought back split rims. You could mount/demount tires yourself with simple tools, and it would improve the gene pool, since stupid people could be relied upon to kill themselves trying to take rims apart with air still in the tires.

All the lawyers I know that are on this site have a great sense of humor, so I'm reasonably sure I haven't offended anyone with that.

I'm a lawyer and my fave lawyer joke is:

Why do lawyers always wear their shirts buttoned all the way up to the neck and neckties?

. . .

wait for it

. . .

To keep their foreskins from rolling over their heads.
