Mixed wheel sizes

I recently acquired four AMG Aero 17x7.5 wheels to run on my 300CE. I'm wondering if I need to get a fifth one to carry as a spare. If I did not, would the car be drivable if I used the 15" spare if I had a flat in one of the 17" tires?

yes

Yes.
I had that experience and the manual says it's alright.

Be sure you have the 15" lugs with the spare
(the 17x7.5s are different right?).

Anyway, you can't use it as a replacement wheel (for an extended period)--
but it works for the emergency purposes of a spare.

I was thinking that it would not be unlike one of those weenie wheels they put in many new cars these days.

It would work fine. On my 400e i had 17" amg monoblocks, and when i got a flat, i put the spare 15" 8 hole on and all was cool.

Great, that saves some $$$, a rarity with my cars. But I didn't realize that there were different lugbolts, I'll have to look into that.

Just make sure the outside diameter of the spare matches the other tires because running different sizes on the rear will toast your diff lube and can ruin your bearings and or seals.

I know of a guy who did this and ruined a diff, about the only known failure of a mb diff I know of personally.

Aren't the small spares in new cars generally a lot smaller than the regular tires? I figured it didn't matter as long as you only used them to get to the next repair facility.

True.

But personally I feel its hard to beat a spare that matches the other tires so that if you have a blowout in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night you can fit your spare and worry about fixing the damaged tire in the morning and just keep driving at your normal speed.

(I have had a blowout in the middle of the night without a sound spare and its no fun.)

Second best choice is a spare the same diameter.

Last choice is a midget spare.

You'll get no argument from me about that, Tom. I hate those things. On the other hand, they're certainly better than nothing in a pinch!

Does anyone know if the 17" wheel with tire will fit in the 124 spare wheel well?

nope

It won't. They weren't thinking that far ahead

T_walgamuth:
You almost met the second guy. I broke the front wheel (on Friday)-- rotated so the fronts would both be 17s, then put the 15 on the rear. Thought it would be good until Monday.

Saturday evening a guy put it on the rack for me and told me exactly what you and Luke are saying. The 15" was almost 1/2" shorter (234/45/17s vs 195/65/15s) and the rotational speeds were different. I could just tell something was wrong on the expressway. So I stopped and had it checked.

Close call.

cars can operate with little to no issues with smaller diameter tires on one corner for a limited tire and a majority of cars with the biggest exclusion being mechanically driven all wheel drive cars. In the rear differentials are designed to allow different rotational speeds if this wasn't the case the inside tire would spin in every corner (much like the way my drag car with it's detroit locker reacts going around a corner) and in the front the tires are no connected to each other .... it's not something you want to do for an extended period of time but, it will not hurt anything in short term use even though you will notice driving and handling irregularities

as long as you are around town only you probably are fine. a trip on the highway is not a good idea.
