snow tires

I know its pretty warm right now but I am thinking about a choice of winter tires for 240d.
We live on the steepest gravel road in town with a driveway that is not much better and have always run Hak 1 studs on all wheels.
This is on both my front drive only TDI jetta and Toy Corolla.
While I have sometimes cursed the noisy, rough ride on the paved portiion of my driving, which is considerable; I always bless it on the icy stuff which is all I really care about.
The rear drive MB will only be out long 3 seasons with possible and considerable snow
It currently has good but slghtly worn all seasons that I feel ok on till there is a snow that sticks.
So I think studs might be overkill and it will really rough up the ride.
I am ok with a true snow tire and will put 4 on the car anyway.
I know there are good a few good choices including Hak.
Some personal ride feedback would help as I don't want to sacrifice safe roadholding at the expense of ice traction and I only know the stud ride which has it's cornering limits on wet pavement!
Still got time ruminate about it till I need them.
Thanks
Andrew

I've tried others but always come back to Michelin. On a snow tire I have no idea if there are others better, but around here i seldom get beyond m+s.

We had about 10 feet of total snow last winter and many ice days so all season tires have their limits.

I swear by Blizzaks... Get a set of four never put them just on the rear wheels

I had a 300D back in 2003. I mounted 195/74R14 Blizzaks on the Bundts and they were great. I drove thru 6-8 inches of snow with ease. For a "harder" compound snow, I had both the Dunlop WinterSport M3's and Blizzak LM-25s on the W8 - both H-rated and really good in snow with no real compromise on wet/dry roads like the "multi-cell" Blizzaks.

Well after much research and yaketeyyak about tires I have come back around to Nokian Nordman 2 which is the newer name for the Hak 1 only I did not get them studded.
I will give them a fair test this winter and let y'all know how they work out.
I have some concrete wheel weights I made for my tractor that I am going to put in the trunk wells for added heft and traction.
Let it snow!
