Ticking noise from wheels
On my 85 300TDT, I am getting a ticking noise from the wheels. I thought it was from the front, I took it in and the mechanic found a spot where the dick brake was hitting the dust shield. He fixed it with new disks, but the noise has come back almost immediately. I took it back, we went for a ride, and now he thinks it may be from the back?
So, does this car have rear disks or drums? Any idea what would cause the dust shield to hit the rotor? I am thinking of just taking a look myself, but I don't know how to remove the caliper. Thanks |

Ouch.
The rear has drum-style emergency brakes. How fast is the ticking? What condition are the rotors in?

The ticking is related to speed, sounds like on tick per revolution, but some times it ticks twice as fast. I have new front disks as of a few days ago, and I think I had the back done last fall with new pads.
The tick does not go away when the brake is applied. |

Someone did check the torque of the wheel studs? I have had ticks from wheels at least a couple of times from studs not snug enough. Cheap and easy to check. Probably not it but a slight possibility. Use a torque wrench to quickly check.
Also unless the tick is very high pitched it could be a cv joint. Someone with their head out the window might help you locate the area of tick. The alternating change in tick from once per apparent revolution to twice would tend to make me more suspicious of the cv joints. At least have a look to make sure the boots are still intact. Your mechanic did lift the wheels off the ground and turn them by hand? The tick seeming to change frequency is the clue it is not a stone in the tire tread or something like rotor interference or bearing I think. It would always be constant frequency at the same speed. Again the only thing I can think of that could double up in frequency at the same speed from time to time is one of those pesky cv joints. Make sure of whatever it is before spending the money. Just noticed the tick does not stop when putting on brakes. Usually when you remove the load a bad cv joint goes quiet. Does it stop when you remove your foot from the diesel pedal? Not always though and there still is the problem of frequency change of the ticking at the same speed. That is still the primary clue to me at least. For example if you were say driving at 30 miles per hour and it was ticking away. All of a sudden at that constant speed the ticking doubled up it does eliminate all forms of an interference problem I can think of. Instead something mechanical has changed. Just my opinion. mistel, go back and edit your original post... kinda misspelled that first diSk....
anywhoo. if you have dust shields, you could have a loose one hitting the caliper. pull the wheels off and look for something that is rubbing. also, have you recently changed wheels? incorrect length lugs could be hitting something... does the noise change when you apply the parking brake? is the noise changed by making left or right turns?
